America Hit Its Debt Limit, Raising Economic Fears
Source: New York Times
WASHINGTON — The United States hit its debt limit on Thursday, prompting the Treasury Department to begin using a series of accounting maneuvers to ensure the federal government can keep paying its bills.
In a letter to Congress, Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen said the government would begin using what’s known as “extraordinary measures” to prevent the nation from breaching its statutory debt limit and asked lawmakers to raise or suspend the cap so that the government can continue meeting its financial obligations. “The period of time that extraordinary measures may last is subject to considerable uncertainty, including the challenges of forecasting the payments and receipts of the U.S. Government months into the future,” Ms. Yellen said. “I respectfully urge Congress to act promptly to protect the full faith and credit of the United States.” The milestone of hitting the country’s $31.4 trillion debt cap is the product of decades of tax cuts and increased government spending by both Republicans and Democrats. But at a moment of heightened partisanship and divided government, it is also a warning of the entrenched partisan battles that are set to dominate Washington in the months to come, and that could end in economic shock. 14. It's gonna get worse. Way worse.
I have this fear that the House GOP is going to sink us into an economic bloodbath in the next two years because it's all about regaining the White House for them.

2. Hope all you capitalistas are paying attention
Unless you’re willing to let the world economy go up in flames, why TF aren’t you leaning on these nihilists? If you’re onboard with economic collapse, then you’re gonna FAFO.

4. If they're like Paul Singer, they're now looking at ways to cash in
Wait until the default;
wait a little more for some panicky funds to sell their bonds; use your Caymans laundromat to buy them on the black market; sue the Gov't for 10 times+ what you paid; get (or bribe) some Repug judge to give you what you want. Worked for him before. |

3. Notice to rich men who want to stay that way
Please note that when Democrats control the House, there is never any sort of a panic or even a vague concern that they will suddenly turn stupid and default on the debt, throwing the whole world but especially this country into economic freefall. Only Republicans do that, Republicans were born that stupid and there is nothing you can do about that except smarten up and stop wasting your money on supporting them.
Got it? You might not like sharing the bounty with ordinary citizens who created it for you and we know you especially hate supporting the country that made you rich by paying your fair share of taxes. However, neither of those things will make you poor. Republicans will. Got it? |

5. Ugh. Why oh why didn't we deal with this in the lame duck session??
Good grief. Anyone with half a brain knew that the Republicans would try to hold the debt ceiling hostage.
And what about that section of the 14th amendment that says: The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned. How is the debt ceiling even a thing? It seems unconstitutional, on its face. |

10. One year ago Putin's Russia defaulted for the 1st time since WWI
Now his GOP minions in the US House of Representatives are making sure the United States does the same, and for no good economic reason.
Go ahead; tell me this isn't just Vladimir Putin's ego & influence at work. |
