According to Mississippi Clarion Ledger, a white Mississippi news anchor for WLBT may have been terminated for referencing a Snoop Dogg line. While speaking to a colleague on air while reporting on a story regarding the entertainers wine, Snoop Cali Blanc, she said, Fo shizzle, my nizzle. For those who arent necessarily hip-hop fans or as in tune with Snoop Dogg, thats slang for For sure, my n**ga.
Barbie Bassett is the news anchor who uttered the phrase to another anchor during the televised program. This took place earlier this month on March 8, and she hasnt been on air since, and her name is no longer listed on the news stations website.
Bassett and WLBT anchor Wilson Stribling were reporting on Snoops latest entry to his Cali Wine Collection. At the end of the news report, Wilson jokingly stated that Bassett would be getting a Snoop Dogg tattoo on her shoulder. To which she responded, Fo shizzle, my nizzle.

Backfired quite a lot in this instance. I really kinda feel for her. Fired is more than excessive here.
Station should have sentenced her to 10 years of free turkey giveaways on xmas and Tgiving... and live broadcasts from Juneteenth BBQ's every year.
Dude was prolly thinking... she didn't just... ah f$%k she did...

This shows the low level of intensity of that slang variant, as there is no effort to mask it.

(18,210 posts)The picture is kind of blurry, so it's hard to tell, but she looks more Gen X to me.
For reference, the baby boom was 1946-1964, so the very youngest boomers are nearly 60 now.
EDITED TO ADD: Okay, I just watched the video, and she does look older than I thought. Could be either an older Gen Xer or a tail end boomer. No reason to assume she's a boomer, though. Boomer is not a synonym for older person. It literally means someone born within a specific range of dates.

(1,523 posts)Just thought that was Snoop Dogs silly rhyming. I had no idea and I grew up with Snoop Dog.
And actually having grown up with it Im still not convinced it means what they said. People used to sing it. No one said it was racist

(17,087 posts)I've followed Snoop since 1992, and I've always known it was Snoop-talk for the n-word. I can't explain it, but back in the 90's things were just different. If you used it in a non-racist way, other kids didn't really get offended. Today, even if an African American said it it's severely frowned upon.

(678 posts)Maybe, as suggested above, they were waiting for any reason to fire this person.

(33,643 posts)If the black dude is shaking his head it's really not because he's deeply offended, he just thinks it's stupid/trite.
Given the subject was Snoop's wine collection, this is just an attempt at a joke using his own lyrics.
Most people don't even know it means anything but 'for sure' and that Snoop said it.
Weak-ass justification for firing, if that's why it happened.
When the other side complains about cancel culture ... here's a perfect example for them to use.
MHO.

"After making an "offensive" comment on air on Friday at the NBC affiliate in Jackson, Miss. WLBT anchor Barbie Bassett of the morning news has issued an apology. Bassett used the phrase "grandmammy," which resembles the slaves' grandparents to that of Carmen Poe's grandmother during a live shot on Friday. But as of now, it is not clear through any internet source, that whether Barbie Bassett was fired from the channel, further information about Barbie Bassett will be updated on our website later."
