Texas manhunt ends with arrest of man accused of killing 5 neighbors

Last edited Tue May 2, 2023, 10:51 PM - Edit history (5)

Source: NBC News

The man accused of killing five of his neighbors with an AR-15 rifle in their Texas home was apprehended by law enforcement agents Tuesday, officials said. The arrest of Francisco Oropesa, 38 in the city of Cut and Shoot, Texas, marked the end of a massive manhunt that on Tuesday was in its fourth day.

A tip called into an FBI line at 5:15 p.m. led to Oropesa's arrest at 6:30 p.m., Jimmy Paul, assistant special agent in charge of the FBI’s Houston field office, said at a news conference announcing the arrest. “We just want to thank the person who had the courage and bravery to call in the suspect’s location,” Paul said.

Oropesa is accused of killing five people, including a 9-year-old boy, in Cleveland, Texas, on Friday night after a member of the family asked him to stop firing his rifle because an infant was trying to sleep, officials have said. Oropesa will be charged with five counts of murder and is being held on $5 million bond, San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers said.

Capers called Oropesa a coward. "He was caught hiding in a closet underneath some laundry," he said Tuesday. Details about the home where Oropesa was found were not disclosed. Officials said the case was still under investigation. The arrest brings an end to the sprawling search that involved more than 250 law enforcement officers, the FBI and a reward of $80,000 for information. The arrest comes four days after Oropesa went to his neighbor's home in the Trails End area in Cleveland, about 45 miles north of Houston, and opened fire, the San Jacinto County Sheriff's Office said.

The City Hall of Cut and Shoot, Texas

From: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cut_and_Shoot,_Texas

Snip...
Name

According to one local legend, Cut and Shoot was named after a 1912 community confrontation that almost led to violence. According to differing versions of the story, the dispute was over:

The design of a new steeple for the town's only church,
The issue of who should be allowed to preach there, or
The conflicting land claims among church members.

Whatever the circumstances were, a small boy at the scene reportedly said he was scared and declared, "I'm going to cut around the corner and shoot through the bushes in a minute!" This statement apparently stayed in the residents' minds and was eventually adopted as the town's name. "Cut and Shoot" has frequently been noted on lists of unusual place names.

No state in the nation is immune. My original home state of TN has a crossroads called Hanging Limb and another called Lick Skillet.

Humptulips is a Salish word, named as such by the Chehalis Tribe a few thousands years ago. The word and name Humptulips means “Hard to Pole.”

This term refers to the difficulty in traveling the river by boat. The Humptulips River was hard to pole canoes up and down stream, caused by downed timber that lined the banks of this beautiful river.

More people and large numbers of very populous metro areas provide an abundance of opportunities for mass shootings.

And of course, that doesn't begin to tell the whole story. In terms of gun deaths per capita, California's near the bottom: https://worldpopulationreview.com/state-rankings/gun-deaths-per-capita-by-state

Many towns, maybe most, had laws that you couldn't carry inthe town limits. If you came in from your ranch with your weapon (which would not have ben totally irrational) you had to check it with the sheriff. You could pick it up when leaving.

That's just one thing off the top of my head - there's more. Very disillusioning, I know.

I don't know if you were joking, but I would object regardless. I find torture, no matter what the pretext, very disturbing. Can't change what happened in the past, but the idea of bringing it back is horrifying to me. I don't care who you want to reserve it for. Charles Manson? Adolf Hitler? Nope and nope.

For the record, I also oppose the death penalty, and I don't find prison rape jokes remotely funny. Some people tell me I'm just no damned fun at all!
