Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei dies after petrol attack

Source: BBC

Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei has died days after being doused in petrol and set on fire by a former boyfriend, Ugandan official says.
The 33-year-old Ugandan marathon runner, who competed in Paris, had suffered extensive burns after Sunday's attack, the doctor treating her had said.
The authorities in north-west Kenya, where Cheptegei lived and trained, said she was targeted after returning home from church.
A report filed by a local administrator alleged the athlete and her ex-partner had been wrangling over a piece of land. Police say an investigation is under way.

There are concerns about the increasing cases of violence against female athletes in Kenya, several of which have resulted in death.
"We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence. As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest In Peace," Uganda's athletics federation said in a post on X.

4. Why a national educational program for women to know the signs of sick men?

If it were men being killed like women I guarantee there would be a program already. Savage and abuse against is too common and destructive to the society to keep putting up with beating and killing of women

call it what it is: femicide, the killing of women because they are women. Countries like France are directly developing programs against it, but I don’t know if they’ve been able to reduce the rate of murder.

17. Mexico has had a law since 2007 criminalising femicide.

It has done exactly 0 to reduce femicides or gender-based violence. There is no institutional will to enforce such laws. Institutional and cultural machismo runs so deep, laws are not enough.
Not sure about France, as it's not my research area. But GBV is a global problem and there is not remotely enough done to combat it. The stuff I read for work would give most people nightmares.

I cannot understand how a piece of land is more important than a life. My thoughts are with her family. So tragic.

Why women need to hold power everywhere. Men in power have fucked everything up for too long.

The old patriarchal society is alive and well here also. Few men actually commit murder but domestic violence and death is all too common in many societies.

She and the other four at the end were all terrific. Such a needless loss.

May the person who did this suffer a karmic end. Like being staked to a fire ant mound.

19. Ex-partner who killed Ugandan athlete dies from burns
Tue Sep 10, 2024, 06:55 AM

The former boyfriend of Ugandan Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei, who killed her by setting her on fire, has himself died from burns sustained in the attack, a Kenyan hospital official has said.

Dickson Ndiema ambushed the marathon runner as she returned home from church more than a week ago and then doused her with petrol and set her ablaze.
...
Local media reported that Ndiema snuck into Cheptegei's home in western Kenya’s Trans Nzoia county with a five-litre jerry can full of petrol before the fatal attack.

He reportedly was then splashed in the fuel as he targeted Cheptegei and subsequently got caught in the fire as he set her alight.
