Woman in Texas ricin case gives birth in custody
Source: AP
DALLAS (AP) The Texas woman accused of sending ricin-laced letters to President Barack Obama and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has given birth prematurely to a baby boy while in custody.
Attorneys for Shannon Guess Richardson and husband Nathan say she gave birth July 4 to a boy named Brody. Shannon Richardson's attorney, Tonda Curry, says the baby faces serious medical issues due to the premature birth and remains hospitalized.
John Delk, Nathan Richardson's attorney, says the boy weighed less than 2 pounds at birth and was four months premature.
A federal affidavit alleges Shannon Richardson contacted authorities to try to implicate her husband in the ricin letters, before being arrested herself on June 7.

(111,313 posts)The woman made a lot of poor decisions. Considering the exposure and the woman's lack of intellectual capacity this case is a prime example where mandatory abortion might be the best thing for all involved.

(111,313 posts)but the odds are certainly stacked against the infant in this case. Considering the circumstances (exposure to toxins) involved abortion should have at least been presented as an option to the mother though.

(6,661 posts)It is not clear whether the health problems became known before or after the child's birth, so abortion may never have been considered an option. But they do know now that this child is struggling, suffering, and using huge amounts of state and federal resources just to stay alive. And what will be his quality of life. All of those issues should factor in to the decision about continuing his care.

(3,121 posts)person they have "arrested" in connection to these Ricin letters? They let the others go after finding charges would not stick BUT causing trouble in the person's life. Do we no longer believe in that constitutional right? Has the court of the media become Judge, Jury and executioner?
