White House faces growing fury in Congress over Bowe Bergdahl deal

Source: LA Times

The White House struggled Wednesday to quell a political storm in Congress over the trade of five Taliban leaders for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl and to repair relations with Democratic and Republican lawmakers outraged over the lack of consultation.

...

Stung by mounting criticism that they had failed to notify Congress before moving the five Afghan prisoners from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, administration and military officials provided a classified briefing to the full Senate, a rare occurrence. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel agreed to testify in the House next week, with more hearings to follow.

Senators were shown a video shot by the Taliban late last year; it has not been publicly released.

...

"He looked either drugged or tired or sick," said Sen. Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.), who said the closed briefing gave him more confidence in the administration's decision. "This man was not in a good condition."

2. I'm so glad congress is focused on this BS outrage instead of working to

Restore unemployment benefits, or fixing the 65,000 dangerous bridges it's citizens cross everyday. Or doing something to help veterans, or combat climate change or even discussing ways to stop offshoring and protect middle class American jobs.

Useless millionaire jerks.

And Fienstien? Can I revoke my last vote?

Unless she retires early. We both know the chances of that happening are slim to none.

4. Obama got his way. That pisses them off.

Suck it, Congress--all of you fake-ass shits who pretended you wanted Gitmo closed, but really didn't...Pretended you wanted Bergdahl back, until you didn't...because the war is ending and you can't stand it.

16. If Obama had not gotten Bergdahl back one way or the other, we would only hear

cries from the Republicans that he left an American soldier to die. They would have made a fuss no matter what Obama did.

Article I, section 8 of the Constitution grants the authority to Congress to "make rules concerning captures on land and water."

There is some question as to whether the captures clause applies to captures of people and not just property during war, but Obama might have been smart to follow the law that required him to report what he was planning to Congress.

On the other hand, Obama is the commander in chief and has the authority to make decisions about many things during a war.

But politically, Obama probably should have consulted with Congress.

Then again, maybe not because the Republicans in Congress would have just caused trouble no matter what happened.

8. I'm glad the President is finally saying "fuck you" on this "I don't have the say on gitmo" shit.

That's what this is really about. The Constitution gives him near absolute power on pardons and reprieves for offenses against the United States, with cases of impeachment being the only exception. Nowhere in the Constitution does it add an exception that says Congressional participation is required. They put that shit in these defense bills to try and weasel their way around the Constitution and usurp executive authority. I think Obama is sick of that shit, he knows he has only a little time left and he intends to make good on his promise regarding Gitmo. That's what I honestly believe is happening right now.

17. Congress is supposed to have a lot of authority that it now refuses to exercise.

That is a shame. We have so many recalcitrant and irresponsible Republicans in Congress. They are anything but patriotic, just bent on feeling their own power. What a bunch of psychological midgets. No offense to short people. I'm relatively short myself. But the Republicans are so insecure and so little in spirit that they cannot bring themselves to do what is right for our country. Wisdom is lacking in the Republican caucus in Congress. Wisdom.

If Obama had decided to leave Bergdahl behind, the MIA flags would have been flying again. Now that Obama is bringing Bergdahl home, Republicans are criticizing him for trading probable members of Al Qaeda for Bergdahl. It's unbelievable. There was no good solution in that situation. Either way, Obama would have been criticized by Republicans. But no Republican president would have done anything different.

12. This is what the GOP has been drooling for since Obama has been President:

You'd better believe this is going to be MUCH bigger than Benghazi in their evil eyes.
And the fact that both news-bits start with the letter "B," makes it so much easier to convey their bull shit via Fox.

And I mean that with all the vindictiveness of a John Kerry. They put themselves in this box, by tolerating and encouraging such general bad behavior in all aspects of governance by their team and by the rest of the "public servants".

A plague on all their houses! What goes around, comes around.

20. Face The Nation ETC.

All the Sunday shows that feature the gop ranting against EVERYTHING the President does or says, would have to move their time slots to a weekday. Little Johnny McCain, Lindsey Graham, Palin and the rest of them will be bursting at the seams to spew their hatred. None of the hosts will replay the video of them all appealing to the President to get this soldier back. Why are they called "representatives"? They do not represent any people I know. "Obstructionists" would be a better title for them. Looks like they have ALL been handed their talking points since they are all deleting their posts about being happy with President Obama on this. Too bad they do not have work to do, such as job creation, unemployment benefit extension, climate change laws, campaign finance laws, you know stuff like that.

HAGEL TO APPEAR AT HASC HEARING: House Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon (R-Calif.) has invited the defense secretary to testify before his panel on June 11.

“Secretary Hagel will testify to the House Armed Services Committee next week about steps the department took in our national interest to conduct the detainee transfers that led to the safe return of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl,” Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby told Morning D. “The secretary understands there are concerns by committee members about some of these steps, and he looks forward to addressing those concerns.”

36. The White House needs to tell them all to fuck off.

For all we know, the kid had a mental breakdown while in the field. No one knows what happened until they ask the soldier and the matter is investigated. In any case, the right seems to be arguing for letting a soldier stay in captivity and die. If that's not un-American, I don't know what is.
