Michigan man who shot Renisha McBride on porch gets 17-32 years

Source: Los Angeles Times

A man who shot and killed Renisha McBride while she was knocking on his door just before dawn in a Detroit suburb was sentenced to 17 to 32 years in prison after an emotional hearing that had both the defense attorney and a judge in tears as emotional family members looked on.

Theodore Wafer, 55, who was convicted last month of second-degree murder for shooting 19-year-old Renisha McBride in the face, read a short apology.

"To the parents, family and friends of Renisha McBride, I apologize from the bottom of my heart and I am truly sorry for your loss. I can only hope and pray," he said tearing up, "that somehow you can forgive me."

Judge Dana M. Hathaway then sentenced Wafer to 15 to 30 years in prison, plus two consecutive years for the gun crime.

This is beyond carelessness, there was no thread to the man's life and no need to take it to this level of violence.

The only ray of hope is that this verdict be seen as a warning to other would be home defenders.

Just sad for her and her family.

a person knocking at your door--yes before dawn that can be kind of scary, but call the police don't just open the door and shoot somebody. It's not like she was breaking in--she was knocking for God's sake!

I couldn't help but think that if that were a 19-year old white woman knocking on his door I guarantee you he wouldn't have opened the door and shot her. It's because she was black.

It's a tragedy to be sure. I can't imagine killing someone for knocking on your door.

In the South, the guy would have gotten away with it. All you have to say is "I was afraid for my life" and you get no-billed by the grand jury.

I guess it was the best outcome possible, but it will in no way help solve the inherent problems in our country that leads to incidents like this.

As for security that will now be taken care of by the prison guards.

Without a gun he would have called the police and checked his doors and windows. With a gun he is transformed into Rambo.

It seems to me it's like setting a bottle in front of an alcoholic or sweets in front of a dieter. No bottle no drink. No sweets no mouthful. No gun no shots fired.

I pray that Wafer will become enlightened in prison about the causes and conditions that landed him in prison. I pray that he can transform his experience into wisdom and be helpful to the angry fearful aggressive men that he will meet in prison.

Of course that is no excuse for shooting someone merely knocking on your door. But Fox and Limbaugh definitely bear some responsibility.
