Democrat Chad Taylor drops out of U.S. Senate race against Pat Roberts, Greg Orman

Source: Kansas.com

The race for U.S. Senate no longer has a Democrat. Candidate Chad Taylor dropped out of the race Wednesday, opening up room for independent candidate Greg Orman to face U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts head-on in November.

Taylor, the district attorney for Shawnee County, withdrew his nomination and requested that the Secretary of State’s Office remove his name from the ballot three days before the senatorial debate at the Kansas State Fair in Hutchinson.

“After much consideration and prolonged discussion with my supporters, my staff, and party leadership at every level, I have decided to end my campaign for the United States Senate,” Taylor said in an exclusive statement to The Eagle.

Taylor’s decision to drop out comes on the same day that Orman was endorsed by more than 70 former Republican lawmakers.

Orman’s candidacy, buoyed by television commercials and social media, has received national attention. Although he trailed both major party candidates in the polls, several analysts saw him as the candidate with the momentum in the race. “He’s created a buzz for himself and that’s pretty impressive for an independent candidate,” said Michael Smith, a professor of political science at Emporia State University.

Orman would lead Roberts 43 percent to 33 percent in a head-to-head race, according to an August poll from Public Policy Polling.

If it helps getting Roberts out, and keeping the Repubbies out of the majority, I'm all for it...

about a month ago (Rachel had this on her show tonight) and he said he would caucus with the party that wanted to actually get things done in Washington. That means if it's 50-50, he'll probably go with the dems. We can hope anyway!

He obviously could be taking a somewhat moderate stance since his main opponent is Republican.

Orman will very likely caucus with Democrats when it matters. He is being supported by old school Republicans who are tired of tea bagger antics.

Orman will remain rather vague -- it is Kansas and we all know what's the matter with Kansas.

Yes, he's not as crazy as Roberts, but I'm not convinced this help.

And I think there are still plenty of sane people in the Republican Party in many other States infected by the Ekockola (dibs)virus that need an inoculation.

extremism and the RNC and RSCC will have to spend money in freaking Kansas. Imagine the Democrats having to spend money to keep Vermont.

Oh, and Brownback is toast. Orman will try to tie Roberts to Brownback, and Roberts will have to throw Brownback under the bus.

Go to the Kansas forum here and see what I wrote. I feel bad for Chad he was sold out months ago. Way before the primary. He had tremendous pressure this last week to drop out. Nearly every high ranking Democrat in a 5 state area contacted him to drop out. The plan 6-8 months ago was for Orman to run independent, as a disaffected Democrat, to pick up those moderate republicans and have a shot. Plans got a little crazy when Chad was polling within 4 points of Roberts and Orman a distant 3rd.
Chad finally gave in. There will be another race down the line and those who talked him out of the race will support him financially at that point in time.
OK, so is Orman really our guy. He says he'll caucus with whoever the majority is. He thinks he and Angus King can control the senate. (NOway Bernie will caucus repug)
Orman is pretty much a blank slate. He will be a hell of a lot better than Roberts on social issues, but he's pretty vague on most others. He's good at pointing out problems but slow in offering his solutions.
He's going to be very friendly to big business and he's promised to throw in 2 million of his own money if needed.
Sorry Chad. You got caught in the middle of something, not your doing.
You took one for the party.

I posted this earlier and had to run out.

Lots of interesting analysis in the thread since I've been gone.

Hard to believe Orman won't be a step up from Roberts, at least...
