Lt. Gov. LaVon Heidemann is out.
Heidemann resigned today - a day after a court issued a protection order to his sister, who alleged that he grabbed her wrist and pushed her in a quarrel over their elderly mother.
An emotional Heidemann said Tuesday he was resigning, both as lieutenant governor and as a running mate for Republican Pete Ricketts. He said he was grateful for the opportunity to serve the state but was resigning for the good of his family. He took no questions.
Heidemann - his voice breaking ended his statement with: "I love this state, and the people of this state who have supported me."

......Flood said he knows from experience as a rural attorney that caring for a loved one with health problems and dealing with estate issues can be difficult for anyone.
Heineman said the lieutenant governor had alerted him a few days ago that he was involved with a family dispute, which he hoped would be resolved privately.
"I don't know a single Nebraskan who would want any family matter like this played out in the public arena," the governor said. "It's very difficult."

LINCOLN Pete Ricketts has named State Auditor Mike Foley as his new right-hand man.
Within hours of Lt. Gov. Lavon Heidemann resigning from his post and withdrawing as Ricketts running mate in the gubernatorial race, Ricketts had his backup plan in place.
Ricketts announced Tuesday that Foley would be joining the GOP ticket. Foley, who is widely known in Republican circles, brings experience and a political base to the campaign.
Ricketts said he has submitted a petition to the Secretary of States Office asking to have Heidemanns name taken off November ballot, though its unclear if that can be done. State law required Ricketts to name his lieutenant governor by Sept. 1, and there is no mechanism to remove his name after that date, the Secretary of States Office has said.
