WEED, Calif. (AP) -- Officials say more than 2,000 homes are threatened and huge swaths of timberland have been destroyed by an out-of-control wildfire in Northern California.
State fire officials say the blaze east of Sacramento was threatening 2,003 single residences and about 1,500 other structures Wednesday night.
It has now burned nearly 44 square miles of trees and brush. Some 2,500 firefighters have it 5 percent contained.
U.S. Forest Service Supervisor for the Eldorado National Forest Laurence Crabtree tells the Sacramento Bee that the blaze has brought significant losses of public timberland, private timberland and watershed territory.
Most of the threatened homes were in Pollock Pines, 60 miles east of Sacramento.

Not mentioned was the number of air tankers. They did have 2 of the DC-10s on the first day
I have family in Klamath Falls, and Weed is pretty much at the end of my cars range, so it's the last fuel/food/bathroom stop when i head north. This breaks my heart. But I have to give huge huzzahs to CF and the other agencies involved. I can't think of a worse nightmare then a wildfire that immediately enters an urban area. They saved more then was lost and won a huge battle to save the mill. That mill will be closed for a while, but it's the main economic engine for the town aside from selling "I (heart) Weed" t-shirts.
