@AP: BREAKING: Police say they've found human remains that could be those of UVa. student missing since Sept.
Remains Found in Search for Missing UVA Student Hannah Graham
Human remains were found Saturday on an abandoned property during the search for University of Virginia student Hannah Graham, who has been missing for more than a month, authorities said. The remains were found around noon near Old Lynchburg Road in Albemarle County, said Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo. The area is less than 10 miles from where Graham, 18, was last seen. Longo said he made a very difficult phone call to Grahams parents to share the discovery with them, but forensic tests need to be conducted to determine the identity of the remains.
Search coordinator Mark Eggeman appealed to anyone who lives near Old Lynchburg Road to report anything suspicious they might have seen the night Graham went missing. Eggeman said that investigators had canvassed the area where the remains were found for any evidence related to the case.

(19,964 posts)One of the reasons her case has gotten a lot of coverage is that her death may be the work of a local serial killer.

(45,788 posts)The deaths of young black women that may be the work of a serial killer are often ignored by the media.

(19,964 posts)I was just providing more information for those unfamiliar with the case. No need to get pithy with me, Hissyspit. I've spoken out about missing white woman syndrome before and just made some posts to LGBT about the disproportionate violence and police harassment against black women in the transgender community. Your anger is misplaced.

(5,842 posts)Is that people saw the beginning of the end game occur on video. Had it not been for that footage her likely killer could still be on the streets.

(450 posts)about the hyped media coverage over a missing or dead white woman in comparison to coverage for minority women that are crime victims. That is what I'm discussing here. You are a great example of why the media does this. They do it for ratings and web clicks.

After all, the airliner probably got more airtime on CNN than all missing persons in the last several years collectively received.
Damn! I guess that you essentially did:
Why do so many people in the USA get upset about a plane crash..
[hr]
when every day in the USA 44 people are murdered and about 90 are killed in car crashes?

If these data points are coupled to your apparent aversion to publicizing Amber Alerts...
3. Posting this here is silly

There is no way some one random reader is going to read this and just happen to see the missing kid.

...one wonders what your bizarre and contradictory preferences for publicizing missing persons actually mean.

(450 posts)silly. I just find it odd that the media, police and the press will get all excited about a missing white woman with press conferences and endless stories, but if a black or latina woman goes missing there is a dead silence. In my own city five female minority teenagers where reported missing on the police blotter over the last two months. When one teenage white girl went missing her picture was posted on the local online newspaper's front page and the TV media did a story about her.
Do you find that odd at the very least? I do.

(10,559 posts)I think the post you responded to ought to generate some soul searching.
While it is nice to care about the election, all politics are local and people will vote on how they feel criminals should be pursued/punished, the effectiveness of government in doing those things, and how the media portrays events/people involved.
Comments about "missing white woman" syndrome should generate discussions about accountability; if your town has five missing women, presumed dead, and "the powers in charge" think that is good, organize a freaking protest - it seems to be getting attention in Ferguson.
But this is a discussion board; people whine about all kinds of things here: politics, media, dead teenagers, and even other posters. At the end of the day, each of us gets to determine whether this is a place of entertaining diversion or inspiration.
My opinion, of course. Your mileage may vary.

(450 posts)Do not post or link to any private/personal information about any person, even if it is publicly available elsewhere on the Internet.
Here is some reading material about the racism in the US media which is most likely driven by ratings or web clicks.

(6,819 posts)There has been little attention focused on a young African-American woman and a transgender woman who have been missing for over a year from Central Va. However, that discussion is for another time and place.

(6,819 posts)Thousands of people were searching the countryside Realtors were searching vacant properties. Va. Tech provided two drones with high tech sensors. And Yes, I wish the same level of attention was paid to all missing people, not just the ones that Nancy Grace pretends to care about. One of the missing people from the Cville area is transgender.

Yes, Matthews is owed the presumption of innocence but given his past history if it looks like a duck and sounds like a duck...:
