How bad a president was Donald Trump?
Donald Trump's presidency is now behind us. But the debate over how bad a president he was has only just begun.
A new Pew poll sheds some light on how Trump's presidency currently ranks -- and the returns are not great for the billionaire businessman. A total of 53% of those polled say that Trump was either a "terrible" (41%) or "poor" (12%) president, while 35% call him either "great" (18%) or "good" (17%).
As you might expect, how you feel about Trump's presidency is largely dependent on the party with which you identify. Almost 9 in 10 Democrats say Trump was a "terrible" (72%) or "poor" (17%) president. More than 6 in 10 Republicans call Trump a "great" (37%) or "good" (36%) president.
While it's a bit early to draw conclusions about Trump's legacy and how history will remember him, this poll is far from the only evidence that suggests that the 45th President may wind up toward the bottom of rankings of the 44 men who have held the office. (Grover Cleveland was both the 22nd and 24th president, and these rankings don't yet count President Joe Biden.)

Donald Trump was the shittiest president in my lifetime. Worse than both G DUHbya and Nixon.

(21,921 posts)His corruption was monumental.
His mendacity was constant.
His ignorance was epic.
His weaknesses were damaging.
His stupidity was dangerous.
Trump will not be remembered well and history will not absolve him of his criminality.
It is profoundly distressing that so many Americans still think Trump was a good president.

(16,888 posts)I, too, find it extremely distressing that over 74 MILLION ( ) thought that he deserved another term to do even MORE damage to our country.
But of your list, I think THIS was the most profound: 'His stupidity was dangerous.'
Indeed it was. His ignorance of the law - his inability to understand international dynamics - his not having a single clue as to how the government works - all of that and more leaves me to be somewhat amazed that we did not stumble into a serious international crisis based on his ignorance and stupidity.
Only by the grace of God, and in spite of IQ45 did we survive.

(21,921 posts)Trump was a wanna-be mob boss and thought that the presidency would give him unlimited power. I've no doubt that Putin and Kim told him the same.
The jerk didn't comprehend how our government is supposed to work.
The other distressing thing is how many Republicans-- almost all of them!-- went along with Trump's un-Constitutionality.
How can our country recover from such a debasement of our fundamental principles?

(51,974 posts)He primary goals were:
A) enrich himself through constant grift and legislation
B) further his own power by corrupting people and institutions
C) sow division and hatred on a daily basis.
Seen as an American president it's hard not to put him at the bottom. Ok, he didn't trip us into a civil war or cause an lengthy depression, but not for lack of trying.
But really, he needs to be seen as an instrument of Russia and domestic adversaries who see a personal benefit in destroying our government and various social protections.
From that perspective, he did a fairly good job and came close to achieving some truly disastrous objectives. Fortunately for us, he was too incompetent to succeed even in rotten goals.

(16,888 posts)Truly, an eye-opening observation - thank you!
As I think about it, candidates in the past have sought the office because they wanted to do something FOR the country and its people. But, NO, not THIS guy!
It was all ME - ME - ME!!!!!!!!
And the sickening part of it is that 74 million wanted MORE!
