Harvey Wasserman: Bush won the 2004 election by electronic vote theft

Harvey Wasserman of Columbus, Ohio, has been a vocal critic of electronic voting machines. He co-wrote the book, "What Happened in Ohio: A Documentary Record of Theft and Fraud in the 2004 Election." His upcoming book is titled "The Strip & Flip Selection of 2016: Five Jim Crows & Electronic Election Theft." We talk to him about his concerns for the upcoming presidential race.

1. We're still using electronic machines.

Although at least here in SW Ohio, they print out results on a roll of paper as they go along. I doubt those rolls are ever checked, though, unless someone lawyers up and demands a recount.

2. yeah, the huge problem is the lack of ability to really verify the input votes

and it can't be fixed in time for this next election. We will need to be vigilant about this election, and not be afraid calling out signs of fraud.

4. What would be nice is to have the machines spit out their electronic totals and have those tallied

by one set of folks, then have all the rolls automatically read and those separate tallies spat out by another machine that doesn't have access to the tallies from the electronic cards. You could check em within an hour or so at most polling locations, having an 'instant' recount every time. Any time the two don't match, the roll goes to be examined by humans.

I actually was a precinct captain for the Dems at a local election that used electronic voting machines. It was interesting. There is some initial test that they work properly on a very basic level, but that could be easily overcome with the right code.

3. Fun Fact: The electronic voting machines for 2016 are already outdated and decrepit.

Electronics last about 10 years, depending on how you store them andsoforth. (Especially electronics using semiconductors.) If your county bought voting-machines or ballot-scanners in 2006, there's a very good chance that most of them no longer work properly.
