and their probably ancestor, h. Heidelbergensis. Those guys were around until about 200,000 years ago, so likely one of them looked at one of our modern type ancestors and wondered who the silly looking half wit was.

Although I have not seen good linear data, it would appear that the decline in cranial capacity has trended with the rise in civilization, perhaps at least partly because civilization reduced the number of daily threats to existence. It is particularly interesting when put in the context of the encephalization quotient, which compares the relative brain mass versus body mass.

Still, there is some satisfaction in saying that the average Republican voter (or Bears fan, or NRA member, or Fox News viewer, or whatever) has a brain about 20% smaller than the average cave man. It is very true, just wonderfully out of context.
