Nearly 100,000 Children In U.S. Tested Positive For COVID-19 In Last 2 Weeks Of July

Source: Huffington Post

More than 97,000 children in the U.S. tested positive for the coronavirus in the last two weeks of July, underscoring the difficulty for schools considering if or how they can reopen in the fall, according to a new report.

The findings, compiled by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association, included data from 49 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and Guam. But the report didn’t include complete data from Texas — which has seen a surge in cases — or parts of New York, meaning the number of infections could be higher.

Officials have long warned that the true coronavirus toll may be much higher than reported due to insufficient testing and the lack of symptoms in many people who are infected.

The data adds to growing concern for parents and students as the start of the school year approaches. Many schools and colleges have said they will operate remotely or with an in-person and online hybrid. But other districts have faced pressure from to reopen as soon as possible, including from President Donald Trump.

That’s small comfort to teachers, staff, families. Each school will be a Petri dish full of unrestrained disease vectors.

5. Where do they get this idea that children don't get sick?

I mean, chicken pox is less of a problem early than in adulthood, and in certain cases children can fight off colds better than compromised people, but that doesn't mean they don't get sick and spread it to others, which is the ENTIRE PROBLEM.

It's not just teachers - it's office staff: the principal, assistant principal(s), administrative assistants, school nurse(s), guidance counselors, custodians, security guard(s), teaching assistants, school psychologist or social worker, etc

6. COVID-19 and children: Doctors see link between virus and neurological side effects

Emerging research highlights a connection between COVID-19 and significant neurological effects in young brains.

Nia Haughton, 15, occasionally struggles to find the right words, and her memory can be patchy, but as she describes her lengthy treatment in a London hospital as she sits on a low wall beside her home, her account still has the power to shock.

“I don't know which was scarier, her being on the ventilator not being able to breathe, or the fact that she came out of it with a completely different personality,” [her mother] said.

To me that sounds like a life-long aftereffect rather than something that will just go away. In some ways it seems even more horrifying that death.
