If it has a high rate of efficacy it seems they would be shouting it from the roof top.

Against the Delta variant. I know some people were concerned about the one-shot J&J. Those who are vulnerable to the highly transmissible Delta variant are those who aren't yet vaccinated.

20%, 30%, 40% ... 90%. Pick a number, all are "effective".

I have gone looking for an actual science article about the serum studies too, which can tell you a lot, but haven't located it yet.

(serum studies are where they measure how well antibodies recognize and attack a particular variant).

Looks like they are using serum studies to make these statements, and based on similar results with the mRNA vaccines are assuming it will be the same for J&J. I haven't found the serum study data. I only spent a few minutes looking, so it may well be out there somewhere as a preprint.
