She spent a great deal of time with her grandparents, the entire family (5 kids, Mary's Dad was the eldest son, Donald was next-to-youngest of the 5) was expected for any and every occasion, so she knew her Dad's siblings well. And yes, after being sent to military school because he was incorrigible, Donald became his Dad's right-hand because he was a "killer," while Mary's Dad was not.
