Actually, Aldrin lobbied pretty hard to be the first man on the moon. Ultimately, Armstrong went first because he was the mission commander and his position in the Lunar Module was closer to the hatch; it would have been awkward for the two men to shuffle past one another to allow Aldrin to exit first.

In the television series, Star Trek: Enterprise, Captain Archer (Scott Bakula) tells the story about how the pilot was chosen for the first warp flights. The story loosely follows Chuck Yeager's pursuit to break the sound barrier. When he is passed over, Archer asks a friend, "Do you remember what Aldrin said when he stepped onto the Moon." The friend replies, "No." Sarcastically, Archer says, "That's because Armstrong went first." In reality, Aldrin's first words on the Moon were, "Magnificent desolation." Lovely poetry, sir.
