I have been eating ever since I was about 2 years old when my "very Jewish" Rose 'Nana' Kahn would give it to me when she was baby sitting me.. 'ssshhhhh, don;t tell your mother. As if mom couldn't smell it on my breath.

I still love it

and always VITA !!!!!!!!!!

One of the very few products that has stayed the same. Even Worchestershire Sauce ain't the same as it used to be.

I must have not tried it since I think it'd be pretty memorable if I did! They were from Finland and Estonia and died when I was in the primary grades.

I think I would like it as an adult but the key would be to find an authentic version and not from a jar at Safeway.

Years ago (now approaching fifty) my older brother and I worked in a meat department of a small locally owned grocery store. In the Fall, on the day when the first herring arrived in its wooden casks, my brother and I would gorge ourselves.

This was not true of lute fisk!

My mom bought it a lot but I can't remember what we called it. We ate that as a snack.

Guess I'm going to find that plus the Vita pickled herring.

ETA:. We had Ry-Krisp and it looks like they stopped making it.

- and it depended on how it was prepared and served.

I like it with sour cream and green onions on crispy hashbrowns. I had it on German dark rye when I lived in Germany. It was part of an open-faced sandwich with cabbage that had been slightly blanched & then tossed with sweet and sour oils, placed on the bread, topped with the herring, and a little dollop of creme fraiche made with whipping cream, dill, rosemary, and sour cream. Green onion as a garnish.

Another favorite of mine is kipper herrings - With saltine crackers. I'm thinking about ordering some Rollmops online; A pickled herring rolled up with a sour pickle in the middle. My Mother was German, so that probably explains it all. She used to eat her pickled herring with boiled, buttered potatoes.

Damn. Now I'm hungry.
