Mortal Kombat 11 Dev Diagnosed With PTSD After Working On Violent Game

Mortal Kombat 11, thanks to the capabilities of the current generation of gaming, is the most viscerally violent game in the series. But that looks to have had a negative impact on the development team behind the title.

During an interview with Kotaku, an unnamed developer spoke about the research process for the game. To better represent the brutality in the game, developers conducted thorough research on violent imagery. "You’d walk around the office and one guy would be watching hangings on YouTube, another guy would be looking at pictures of murder victims, someone else would be watching a video of a cow being slaughtered... the scary part was always the point at which new people on the project got used to it. And I definitely hit that point.”

Like the normalization of the White House squatter. Daily school shootings. Liars lying.

I wondered about the people who come up with the ideas, when you hear “finish him.”

They surely have to complete with each other to come up with the most violent ideas ever.

A long time ago... late 80’s or early 90’s. It was radical violence then as now.

Johnny Cage fights, wins, you hear, “finish him,” and Cage rips the opponent in half with a punch, takes the leftover torso/head, punching inside it, and makes a puppet out of it, talking in a childish squeaky voice with the newly formed puppet in his hand.

That must take lots of violent thoughts to come up with that.

I thought it was funny. This is just a game and MK has been doing this since the early 90s.

I think the original thread was about a creator getting PTSD. I was just wondering what it’s like living in their world trying to come up with stuff that out does the past. It’s a violent world they research to come up with the most shocking imaginable things.

You watch it on a game, but how do they come up with the stuff?

Mean you can also look at movies like SAW or Halloween for gruesome deaths. Grindhouse films also produce a good amount of deaths. I've done nearly every fatality in the game so far and boy they did their research.

They could have gotten source material from movies instead of actual murder and death videos. I imagine they took a dive into the dark web for some stuff. The puppet talking fatality reminds me of Dead Silence when the father was turned into a big ventriloquist dummy.

But I guess you gotta figure out more creative fatalities. MK had been going since the 90s and was one of my favorite games to play growing up. The new fatalities are quite the thing but that's how it's always been. Getting source material from actual death is just...weird.
