Question for moms and dads of daughters in the 12 YO age range.

I have a granddaughter that's a book worm and good student (her mom's a school teacher) and she loves reading the popular graphic novels. She's read most of the Babysitter's Club series and I would like to buy her some of another series. A book search on Amazon lists way too many confusing choices for this old man....

She's not much interested in sports but likes science themes, geography and topics of general interest.

Can anyone here make some recommendations for good graphic novel sets for kids her age?

books, based on Greek mythology. He has another series based on Egyptian mythology. They are in regular novel form and also in graphic novel form.I

Kids also like Mad Brailer's "Last Kids on Earth" series (zombies and monsters, plus a small group of brave, clever friends fighting against the odds).

He bought all of them at our local independent bookshop when the author spoke there. The author had just spoken at his school earlier in the day. My son loved hearing the author speak and he got his new books signed!

Just scanning Amazon for those, it looks like there's quite a list of Heinlein titles. Any particular ones you would suggest as starters for a 12-YO girl?

She might like the Sweet Valley High book series. I wish that I still had these books from my tween years.

She also might enjoy James Patterson's Maximum Ride book series. If I remember correctly, there might be some adult content in these books, so Mom or Dad might want to read them first for approval. Excellent series and very difficult to put down when things in real life need to get done.

Good luck!

There are many choices of books to read these days, especially for adolescents. I'm sure that you will find a few books that your granddaughter will enjoy.

Pretty innocent, clever, and most of all well written, with great artwork. Check it out yourself starting here.

I would guess buying direct would put more money directly into the artists pocket, buying local also has it’s benefits.

Amulet series by Kazu Kizuishi
Any of the Raina Telgemeier books are also good
A series called Giant Days by John Allison
I could go on and on as we are avid readers of graphic novels.

14. Nancy Drew Mysteries.

I couldn't get enough of them when I was a kid. The series has been revised over the years to reflect the changing mores and times. They finally stopped updating the original series and Nancy Drew is now being published in a new series under the title "Girl Detective"

2003–2012: Girl Detective and Graphic Novels Edit

In 2003, publishers Simon & Schuster ended the original Nancy Drew series and began featuring Nancy's character in a new mystery series, Girl Detective. The Nancy Drew of the Girl Detective series drives a hybrid car, uses a mobile phone, and recounts her mysteries in the first person. Many applaud these changes, arguing that Nancy has not really changed at all other than learning to use a cell phone.[66] Others praise the series as more realistic; Nancy, these commentators argue, is now a less-perfect and therefore more likable being, one whom girls can more easily relate to – a better role model than the old Nancy because she can actually be emulated, rather than a "prissy automaton of perfection."[67]
