Follow-up on the 120K "art" banana story

Someone ate a really expensive snack at Art Basel Saturday afternoon — to the tune of $120,000.

For one banana.

By now you have probably heard of the now world-famous banana duct-taped to Emmanuel Perrotin’s outer gallery wall at Art Basel Miami Beach. The piece that sold to an art collector for $120,000.

The $120,000 banana — a real, rather ripe and edible one — is the work of Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan and titled “Comedian.” The work comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, and owners are told that they can replace the banana, as needed.

Instrctions on how to replace the banana are not included.

But New York-based performance artist David Datuna ate the banana at around 1:45 p.m. in front of a convention center full of art lovers, according to gallery representatives.

More power to him. Wonder if pineapple or orange will be his next masterpiece.

Or, maybe he'll trip in an alley, fall into a pile, of garbage, and then sell the resulting shirt for $250,000. I'm rooting for him.

Are bananas going extinct? A deadly fungus is infecting new farms

https://www.today.com/food/are-bananas-going-extinct-deadly-fungus-infecting-new-farms-t160747

A deadly plant fungus has begun to infect banana crops in a region experts have long feared would be especially susceptible to disease.

On Thursday, the Colombian agriculture and livestock authority (ICA) declared a national state of emergency after a new strain of the Panama disease (Tropical Race 4, which known in the science world as TR4), was identified at several banana farms on the country's coastal region. Since Central and South America are home to the world's biggest markets for growing and exporting bananas, the impact of a widespread infection would be detrimental to the fruit's global supply.
