(5,767 posts)1. If they are hardy mums, leave the withered stems on all winter
Gently remove them when the new stems are a couple of inches high.
Pinch or prune one to two inches from the tops of the plants in mid July, mid August and early September, making sure you remove all the buds.
This keeps the plants from getting tall and straggely. It also postpones blooming until early October.
Pruning times vary depending on your local climate. My pruning times are for central Maryland.
