So we watched "The Royal Tenenbaums"
It was OK. I guess I don't see the big appeal, but it was OK.
I did chuckle a few times.
He certainly has a distinct style, but it didn't win me over with this movie.
Is there a better Wes Anderson flick?

(14,784 posts)Some of that though is likely because of the novelty of a new director with their new distinct voice/sensibility/style.
Martin Scorsese did a special episode of Roger Ebert's show (after Siskel died, before Roeper became permanent cohost) where they named their top ten movies of the 90s, and Scorsese put Bottle Rocket on his list.
It was a commercial failure ($5 million budget, $0.5 million box office) upon release but highly rated by critics.

(4,138 posts)about Wes Anderson. It has some rough edges, and really drags in spots, despite not being very long.
But it is very funny and charming, especially pretty much whenever Owen Wilson's character is onscreen.

(33,643 posts)representative example, and definitely among his best, much like Fargo would be for the Coen's, or Pulp Fiction for Tarantino.
I loved Royal Tenenbaums, but I like quirky, random shit in general. Napoleon Dynamite is a great example ... super random, and slyly funny ... but it has to be 'your kind' of humor.
Rushmore is probably his most popular and I could easily see someone finding it 'better than' Royal Tanenbaum's ... to me they're about equal.

(26,874 posts)I loved Napoleon Dynamite.
Maybe I just wan't in the right frame of mind when I watched the Royal Tanenbaums. I was really tired after a rough day.
I didn't dislike it or anything, I guess I found it mildly amusing. But I guess I didn't get why people really love his work.
I'd certainly give another of his movies a try.
Make sure I'm in a better frame of mind when doing it.

(33,643 posts)As mentioned below, The Grand Budapest Hotel is another very good movie of Wes's.

(3,691 posts)The other WA movies I've watched didn't bowl me over. He has a passionate fan base including A class actors who seem eager to sign on to his projects even if it's just a cameo role.
