Litter size in black bears is sometimes proportional to food supply, particularly in the fall. 2 to 3 cubs is normal. 4 to 5 isn't too unusual if there's good mast in the fall. I think 6 is the record observed by humans, if I recall.

Once spotted a doe with three fawns, which I believe is pretty uncommon. But I then read it was happening more often that year.

A few years back, a group of us were in Shenandoah and took the NPS van down to Hoover Camp. On the way we saw a black bear with four cubs. We stopped and watch for a long while. If you are ever in Shenandoah, that's a must see, even if you don't see a bear with four cubs. You can hike down and back up too.

we had a family in our yard last year and the babies would always scurry up a tree when I yelled at them to shoo

as cute as they are, I am really hoping they stay away in the woods this year
