How To Explain Monty Python. . .

To a young person who has never heard of them before?

After you have finished bemoaning what the world is coming to and feeling very old, where do you start the process?

I chose "The Spanish Inquisition" and gave the example of the comfy chair.

I also listed a few of their movies. Life of Brian strikes me as an excellent starting place, because Christianity's broad sway gives a point of reference for most viewers. Holy Grail should be fairly accessible, but someone completely unaware of Monty Python may not have heard of King Arthur.

What do you think?

2. I'm Following The Gourd!

I'm Following The Sandal!

Life of Brian is one of my favorites.

I don't know if you can explain Monty Python, because you can't really ever explain a joke.

5. The Grail is how I first found them, back in middle school

It’s so sublimely silly, I think it would accessible even to one unfamiliar with King Arthur.

10. The funniest bits, IMO, are the short sketches - The Dead Parrot,

the Hungarian Phrasebook, the Spanish Inquisition, https://www.dailymotion.com/video/xsefeg and the three-part science fiction sketch where everybody in England turns into Scots and ends with the Scotsman Angus Podgorny playing tennis with a blancmange.

26. Absurd Humor

has helped me survive learning about some obscene history. I would be utterly defeated by now if not for the coping therapy of the absurd.

If somebody doesn't laugh at that, there's no need forward aerial half-turning any further.

20. "Every Sperm is Sacred"

This should be sung, (ironically, of course), during clashing protests with Anti-Reproduction Rights advocates. It will raise morale for the Pro-Reproduction Rights crowd, and confuse and possibly dismay the opposing side.

24. Monty Python isn't explainable, it just is.

You might show them some of the skits first. Otherwise Brian would be my first pick, too. Don’t explain, surprise them.

This is still one of my favorite Monty Python skits.
