Do not use you liquor store slang.

3. They're liquor stores in CT. Packies (sing.:packy) are farther north.
At least where my sister lives near Danbury.

4. For my parents it was
always 'the package store, never the liquor store. I always thought it had something to do with Prohibition.

5. I just say the wine store. Ours has a large selection and has the non-alcoholic wine I like to drink
at dinner. It's called F.R.E. and they have a Merlot that is delightful. I love wine but cannot drink the regular wine because it made me sick.

18. Here's an article in the NYT about a rise in drinkers of non-alcoholic wines.
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/11/dining/drinks/non-alcoholic-wine.html
I've shown it to the store to encourage them to stock a wider variety of such wines. I hope their demand increases and they can expand their stock. I'd love a non alcoholic Prosecco, for instance. I wonder if I could just order it online... |

20. Interesting article, although I had to read a couple
paragraphs a couple times. Couldn't tell if they were touting or dissing it. I finally gathered that the concept was still a work in progress. As is the process.
That said, I'm with you! I hope they continue! Don't know about ordering... If no alcohol no one should be subject to the rules about shipping to certain states. |

6. I'm in the NYC orbit, so it's a liquor store.
Maybe it's a Bastahn thing?

9. I see it spelled packy and packie online, but mostly packy.
I live along the shore, not too far from Rhode Island, and we do call them the packy. There's also one in town appropriately named "The Packy."

12. That's where I want to move to! Eastern CT shore!
But, can't afford Stonington or Mystic. And my #1 requirement is walkability! Coffee! Pizza! Neighborhood tavern. Been away too long.

19. Look at New London!
Very walkable. I walk to work, walk to the food co-op, walk to the coffee shops. We're technically a distressed municipality because our per capita income is low, but we are rich in community engagement, progressive activists and the arts. Our mill rate is high but our property values are still relatively low.

22. Thanks. That is very good to know! I kind of think of Niantic
the same way. Like New London and Niantic and the Havens are interspersed between the wealthier shoreline towns of Madison, Mystic and Stonington.
One big plus in my mind is that in NL you can hop on a ferry to Block Island or Long Island too. What's up with Groton? It looks really depressed there??? |

24. Groton doesn't have a walkable downtown the way New London and Niantic do.
Thames Street is the closest to a walkable downtown, but in general Groton has more strip malls, more EB traffic, less art and culture. Niantic has The Book Barn; New London has good, inexpensive restaurants and lots of artists and ethnic diversity. Niantic's downtown usually has more foot traffic--not snooty but New London's slightly wealthier sibling.

Or is that just a bar with a package liquor license?

16. No serving, no. Just a store to buy liquor and wine. I was
absolutely floored last time I went home to blue law state CT and some packys opened on Sunday.
