Tebow had gone to baseball, a sport I don't really watch. Then, he retired from that. Next thing you know, he's tried out for TE with Jacksonville, and he has a one-year contract.
Most football professionals are having a fit, saying he can't play football, etc. So, I get it, yada yada, but it bugs me when they talk about whether he will whiff on blocking. As a longstanding Tebow fan, let me tell you honey: the guy thrives on trucking people. Hell, he blocked when he was a QB. I've seen plays where he was running the ball and tacklers declined to attempt to tackle him. Tebow can do the sled at 1400 pounds, and he is not going to decline to block someone.
So, I'm just saying. Anything can happen. He might get dumped by someone who is also doing his best to stick; it could happen. But, I just want the world to know that Tebow is not going to decline to block someone. He loves it, he has always loved it, and he has the potential to be really good. No, he's not 6'5 (6'3), but his speed is decent, and something good will happen here.
He also has practiced catching down through the years. He has practiced this position even if there is no demonstrable game to show. He isn't starting cold. So, he has a shot. And, they could put him on the practice squad if one of those hopefuls beats him out. So, there it is.
My favorite player is now Mahomes. But, I will enjoy every second of Tebow's remake, and if he makes the squad, I will not know what to do if the Chiefs play the Jags. Just saying. I love to watch these guys play.

(18,255 posts)He wrote a Bible verse under his eye. Big deal. I know some football players do bigger crimes then that and are not nearly as made fun of or vilified. I wish him all the luck.

(34,195 posts)Isn't Tebow the guy who always got down on his knees and prayed when he was on the field?
He'd catch a ball or make a run or tackle someone and drop to his knees to thank the Lord?
My memory is not that great about him but it seems that's why he got into trouble.
Will we see him doing that again this season?
EndlessWire
(7,121 posts)He did that as a young player, and time moves on. It was part of his charm. The whole Tebow saga thing is something that is hard to discuss. They didn't want to throw their resources behind him or give him a training position because of his dedication. He was a counter culture to their badassednous, and people who benefitted from him turned on him for no reason. It was the deal of the day to have some bad comment on Tebow.
That's all gone. Now, he is a TE, and we shall see what we shall see. I was just bugged because the commentators are saying that he won't be able to block, when this guy can and has blocked before. He absolutely did do that, and at some point, there may be some player who is going to be slow to get up after Tebow trucks him.

(34,195 posts)Wasn't he a pro football player when he dropped to his knees and prayed on the field after every play?
And didn't they have to stop the play clock until he finished every time?
That was part of his charm?
I guess I missed the nuance.

(7,121 posts)And, you are not tolerant at all. After all the victories that were hard fought for, you are bitter. Yeah, TEBOW IS WHITE. Get used to it. Let those that understand go out and change their football positions and play another position. Kaepernick chose another route. Tebow wants to play, and he is out there trying. If he can do it, the Jags win. But, your resentment of him is unjustified. This has nothing to do with Colin's predicament.
What is interesting is that neither man took it back. They both stood up strong. But, you want to turn what could be interesting into something that has some undefinable point of contention that really does no good. It is utterly ridiculous to say that Tebow gets a chance because he is white, when Colin is black. Tebow is getting a shot because he is willing to try another position.
And, I don't understand your comment about end zone celebrations. What has that got to do with anything? You don't like end zone celebrations? I love end zone celebrations.
dawg day
(7,947 posts)I was just remembering when the teams would get penalized for "excessive celebrations".
I was not making a negative comment on Tebow. He can pray all he likes and as enthusiastically as he likes and I'm glad he's not penalized for it.

(7,121 posts)What do you say when a player is down and the teammates all kneel down on the field and wait? Is that okay? I just want to know what is the PC behavior for such a situation is in 2021. I know the networks always say, "Okay, we're going to step aside now," and they go to a commercial. A commercial is real respectful.
I doubt that we will see any of this. Meantime, if he were to catch, oh say, a TD, is he allowed to end zone celebrate? It's allowed now. Is a quick finger-to-the-sky acceptable? Or, is Tebow going to be the exception?
There should be an Espy for the best end zone celebration.

(7,947 posts)The starting qb would throw the td. Then he would go to the sidelines, and tbe second string qb would lead the dance celebration on the end zone. I wonder how they worked that out.

EndlessWire
(7,121 posts)I also think that Colin was a really good player, and he had some great moments. But, he and Tebow both got dumped for different reasons based on the same actions. Colin got dumped and trashed for political commentary; Tebow got dumped and trashed for religious commentary. People will say that they got dumped because of the disruptions to the team, or jealousy by other positions, but I just think that is crap. It was unbelievable the nastiness that ensued for both guys.
Should Kapernick have a position in the NFL? Absolutely. But, remember that Tebow did not have a new position until he decided to switch positions. Tebow is uniquely suited to doing that. Likely, any new team at that time in his life would have found an excuse to dump him from TE, and then he would have settled the question of his ability in a negative column.
But, Tebow isn't trying out for QB. He's trying to play TE for Meyer. Kapernick hasn't decided to do anything like that. Could he be a backup QB? Absolutely. But, I doubt that any of the teams will take him on at main guy now. Is it fair? It wasn't fair to either guy. Would I like to see Colin play again? You bet. They had a ton of guys playing with questionable characters, criminal records, etc. and they ran off Kapernick for a BLM comment. He used the platform that he had to do something which had to be done. Good on him. And, my attitude towards the NFL has changed quite a bit. I'm just looking forward to watching Mahomes and Tebow and how they and their teams fare in the new day.
PS: The Chiefs better not fall apart like they did ever again!

(68,935 posts)He was too slow to play tight end in the NFL, when he was in the NFL.
He didn't get faster in the last 10 years.
Also, he was "trucking" guys of whom 10% tops ever played a down in the NFL. And trucking a guy when one has a full head of steam is very different than the short burst explosion needed to effectively block a rush linebacker in the 3-4, or a DE in a 4-3.
He lacked explosion, even in college. He's not a fast twitch guy.
So, good luck with your wish. Be prepared to be let down.

(7,121 posts)playing in the NFL. They were on NFL fields. The point of my post was to comment on those that are saying that he can't block. He can block. They are saying that he will whiff, and I am saying that he will not.
And, since he was a QB in college, it's hard to say whether he could have played TE in college, since he did not play that position. I have watched Tebow when he ran circles around the defense, so your saying that he is not a "fast twitch" guy doesn't run clear for me. We just don't know how he will do, which is what I said. You have prejudged him on the basis of apparently his college career as a QB. His being fast off the blocks wasn't tested except at Combine.
Good luck with my wish? I want the Chiefs to win the Super Bowl this season. I want to see more of Mahomes' baby. And, I DO want Tebow to do well. So far, so good.
Anything else? By the way, throwing around "3-4... or 4-3" doesn't impress me with your football knowledge. Have a nice day.

(7,121 posts)There's nothing to be gained from talking to you.
Tebow ran a 4.7, which is competitive for a tight end. He's 6'3, which is tall enough. He certainly weighs enough. I recall specifically that he blocked for his team. Back in those days, I watched everything he did. You would never catch a franchise QB like say, Brady, doing what Tebow did. I am not saying that he blocked every play--of course not!--but he did block to save plays, and he ran OVER tacklers when he had to do it. You can call me a liar if you want (you already did, didn't you?) but that's the truth.
I do not worship football players. I am offended by your comment.
As I said already, we don't know how he will do. But, it isn't fair for commentators to get away with saying that he will whiff or fail to get his hands in the dirt. This guy is an insanely competitive footballer who loves to rumble. Whether you like it or not. The most important part is, can he catch under pressure? If it turns out that he has velcro hands and connects, he'll be okay. His hand size is 10.5, I believe. His vertical leap is phenomenal. TBH, I can't remember exactly what it is, but it was really, really good at Combine.
You have turned what could have been a pleasant discussion into a waste of time. You hate Tebow. I believe that he has a chance. Let's agree to disagree. But, let me say, I am not a liar. I watched Tebow for ages. I have heard all the arguments. This argument sniffs out exactly like all the other arguments against Tebow that I have ever heard. We'll see what he can do, or not do. But, I can't deal with the palpable anger here. At least I made it into the right forum for once. It doesn't seem to matter, though.

(19,352 posts)Tim Tebow has a long way to go.
While he did have an impressive catch-and-run during Monday's minicamp session, the former Broncos and Jets quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner has his work cut out for him if he is going to make the Jaguars' 53-man roster as a tight end. CBS Sports senior NFL writer Pete Prisco, who has covered the Jaguars since their inaugural season, took in Tebow's first minicamp practice in nearly a decade.
"He's the smallest tight end on the field, by far," Prisco said of Tebow on CBS Sports HQ. "He looks like one of the kids who didn't grow in his seventh grade year and everybody else grew. That's what he looks like on the field.
"He did catch a pass, [but] he's got a lot of work to do. He's a project. He's a kid that's trying to transition to a new position. That's hard to do. It's even tougher when you're 33 years old. I don't expect him to make the team. I'd be shocked if he made the team. And some people will say, 'Well, use him as a gimmick. Maybe use him as a backup quarterback.' Well, he's not a good passer, and if you're taking Trevor Lawrence off the field, that's a mistake. So I think he has to make the team as a tight end. I don't think he will make the team."

"While he did have an impressive catch-and-run during Monday's minicamp session..." He then goes on to disregard what he saw and criticize what he thinks a successful TE on the Jags should look like. It doesn't prove anything.
You can cherry pick all the negative press you want. There will be lots. But, it should be what-do-I-see, not he-shouldn't-be-able-to-play-TE. The jury is still out.

(7,121 posts)More power to him. Someone in the business office thinks like the Mets did. But, even though Tebow brought them lots of money, he also put his heart into the effort and produced for them as far as he could go. It was an honest effort.
Tebow can play football. You don't want him to be able to do that, but he can. As far as RW kooks, when he stands up and advocates insurrection, then I'll be done. I already dropped him from my IG feed, because I object to Franklin Graham. And, I suspect my gay status wouldn't pass muster. But, that isn't to say that purposefully denigrating someone and lying about them is acceptable behavior. It is not. I only want to watch some entertaining football.
If Hitler were out there playing football, I wouldn't watch. But, I have watched all sorts of assholes playing for fortunes: rapists, dog torturers, felons...it isn't a fan's fault if the NFL wants to overlook all that because it looks good to a demographic and the player makes them money. So, what's Tebow done that merits this hatred? Nothing. He pulled away from Trump as fast as he could when Trump tried to usurp his rep during his 2016 campaign. Tebow has done a sufficient amount of charity work for POC that sure won't get mentioned anytime soon by those that simply hate his color. I respect him for that. And, I respect his work ethic. He isn't Hitler, not by a long shot.
Let's just see what happens. Get some popcorn, learn to relax, and see the results. Put the hate on the back burner, and enjoy. Maybe we will get another Butt Fumble moment. It's all good.

(8,673 posts)Tight end, Trying to change positions, who has been out of football for years, undersized and slow for the position is a side show. He was a great college QB. A lot of fun to watch almost 15 years ago. As a kid he was an amazing college talent. Maybe Canada like Doug Flutie but the NFL, I dont see it. Soon enough we will all see but as you said, he is a cash cow, a bad team that needs to sell some shirts and maybe a couple seats (pre season) can be mutually beneficial for both the team and the Tebow family.

(7,121 posts)YOU said he is a cash cow. I responded. Don't try to turn it around like that. And, there are other players that are pushing the envelope out. You shouldn't be so sure of your judgment.
I love it when people say stuff like, "amazing player, talented, fun to watch." and then proceed to pronounce him unfit. That would be just another challenge to him. And, he's not undersized and slow. This is what the other poster said that you just decided to echo. You have no stats because there are no stats. Tebow is big enough to play TE. What a horror show it would be if EEK! he could run and catch after all.

(8,673 posts)He has been in camp long enough for him to have numbers and they are ok at best. He is undersized, and smaller players, usually use speed to make up for size. His 4.71 to 4.75 speed in most cases will not help him offset his lack of size. Look at the top TEs in the NFL. They run 65-66. Now, Tebow is built like a brick shithouse, but most tight ends are. Also, last season, there were less than 50 players in the NFL that were over 35 years old, and a couple of them have retired so he will be one of the oldest players in the nfl trying to make a comeback after a very pedestrian NFL Career the first time around.
When Tebow was younger, as I said 15 years ago, he was awarded the Heisman. He was great! There were a lot of great college players 15 years ago that went on to NFL careers, there is a reason he did not.
I will give you Haters got to Hate and I dont really like him, that said, we will see if he gets a roster slot and if so, how much football he plays. I dont think the chances of either are that great.

(8,673 posts)My son played division 2 football and was not as big ( size but same height). My son ran a 4.66 40, is 63 and played at 215 lbs. he was an H back so not quite a tight end, but when one of the right ends was out he would move into the starting roll there.
4.66 is a pretty good time for a division 2 player, but not impressive for real division 1 schools and try as he might, with out the help of steroids, he could not get past 215. He was offered preferred walk on status to a couple division 1 schools, but was more interested in playing more than being on a team.
My wife and I have watched a lot of football. In the Jags piece on NFL network, they were not focusing on Tebow, but he was in the background. My son was not that impressed. In the conversation they said he was running sub 5 40s. That is not a very special number at all. When he came out of college, he ran a 4.71and he was lighter and younger. I dont think 15 years later he is any faster now there are a lot of numbers below 5, but when said that way, it usually means you are running closer to 5 than 4.71.
You can call bullshit on the number, and I cant back it up, but my son played against some pretty good division 2 competition and he was not impressed with what he saw. My son would not have been on the same field with Tebow in his prime. He was an amazing athlete. There was clearly a wow factor.

(8,673 posts)From the article. It backs me up a little bit in size and speed.
I cant find anyone who thinks itll work, Breer wrote. He ran a 4.71 40-yard dash at the combine 11 years ago, which is a middling number for a tight end, and really lacks the height and length that youd want at the position (Tebows 6-foot-2, whereas 16 of 20 tight ends at the 2020 combine were 6-foot-3 or taller). And thats without getting to the fact that last week was the first time hed been so much as in a football practice in nearly six years, or that tight end is one of the most physically and mentally challenging position to learn on an NFL field.
EndlessWire
(7,121 posts)He ran a sub 5 40-yard dash which indicates the fast twitch that has been mentioned as desirable. 4.70 is the average 40 time, so Tebow's 4.71 is respectable. It isn't the best, it might be gone, but that's what we have. Tebow fits the physical profile of an NFL tight end. His time was faster than at least one other Jag hopeful out there today. This horse has been beaten to death. Time will tell.

(8,673 posts)He spoke about his feelings that homosexuality is against Gods will and further started a pro-player group that further pushes this message. (7,121 posts)Liberty University is anti-gay, that is well known. But, it is no surprise that Tebow interprets the Bible as anti-gay. He is what he is. His belief obviously doesn't jive with mine. But, I do not hate him for it. Please provide a link to where he made that statement.
I wouldn't spend a nickel attending Liberty University. Out here in California, one Baptist university (unnamed by me because I want no trouble) actually rescinded someone's earned degree because he lied about his sexuality during admissions. It's stuff like that which makes me bristle. It's nobody's business. I would not have advised Tebow to speak at Liberty. This still has nothing to do with whether he can play TE. I won't be inviting him to attend any parties. I do not believe that he will ever change that core value, because it is just too much. Perhaps an event like Saul on the road to Damascus would have to occur.
No one cared when allegations of rape were levied; no one cared when a dog torturer played, and no one cared when other instances of violence occurred off the field. These are core values, too; no one cared. So, although I find myself juxtaposed to Tebow's value (no link,) it doesn't worry me. Like I said, when he stands up and starts preaching insurrection and death squads, then I will protest that view. Had he hooked up with Trump, I would be very, very, very opposed to him, no matter what he said. And, bible study groups are very boring.

(7,121 posts)Not everything is easy like that. People are influenced by their families and often you can trace why people think a certain way just because their families raised them that way. This is powerful etiology and saying that modern times should have increased their perceptions just doesn't work. I am not going to condemn someone to hell just because some parent preached an interpretation of some worldly book that is stupid. Better to keep walking down the road and push back powerfully in a political manner when necessary.
I don't care what any Tebow thinks in terms of social rights. Let them keep to themselves and be met on the road of enlightenment with the most flamboyant among us. They are surrounded by gay people and there is nothing they can do about it. If they want to preach that I shouldn't exist, well, there is nothing they can do about me. G-d made me, the One, and I am correct in my existence. I have a lot to offer. We won't be attending the same parties. But, if I enjoy watching Tebow play football, I am entitled to that. Who cares about that?
I am still waiting for the link that shows exactly what Tebow said about gay people. I cannot find anything in his commencement speech that indicates that. I can't imagine why he would say that publicly. It's difficult to say that all things that don't jive with my own opinions should be cut out and booted to the curb. My own existence hinges heavily on what I feel, as does everyone's, but I want to participate as much as possible with all of creation. I am not threatened by some ignorant opinion. Not yet. One day, he will have a conversation with someone who will enlighten him. At that time, he can decide. I personally doubt that anyone raised in such a strong environment can overcome it, but time will tell. Meanwhile, I'd like to see what he's got left in the tank.
