The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI have something to say about how this site is run!
We live out in the sticks and there is no fiber optic available yet. So, we're still on DSL. This means that sometimes it can take several heartbeats for pages to open, refresh, etc. Then there are websites that can take forever and frequently refuse to load at all for extended periods of time (*cough*reddit*cough*).
Not DU, though. I barely have time to blink and Voila! You can't imagine how appreciative I am for this.
Many thanks to DU admin for making this not just an enjoyable place to hang out and kvetch with friends, but also an efficiently run site.
I'm going to have to find something to do with all this extra time.

I was absent when Skinner made his exit and handover to EarlG. I recently read all of that and had to at the part about the freepers saying how terrible it looked and that it wouldn't be around for very long. Ha!

(22,767 posts)I was here for many years, then had to get away the past few years or so because I had to take myself out of the news cycle for my mental and emotional well-being. Being here presented too much of a risk and made it too easy to slip back into the melee. (Husband still kept me updated on the important stuff, coz you just can't walk around not knowing, right?)
Anyway, being back has felt like slipping back into my softest, coziest, warmest, most comfortable article of clothing. It's good to see old friends again and not have to wonder where someone you're conversing with falls in the great division that's come upon us. I've loved being back.

(7,838 posts)Its nice to be with people who arent strictly focused on me, me, me, and fuck you I got mine like most republicans I know. The only big picture theyve ever seen, is anything that makes THEIR wallet fatter.

(20,867 posts)I remember back when I had a Commodore 64 when you actually had to type in load...whatever.
Well, it's not been that bad, but there were way too many years on dial-up, that's for sure.

(22,767 posts)First, we live on a fixed income and that's way outside our budget.
Second, and I mean this in the nicest possible way, I'd rather go back to dial-up than support Elon Musk.

(3,467 posts)They purposely launch the satellites into an unstable, low orbit initially. They then conduct tests to verify that each satellite is working properly. If it passes the tests in orbit, it is then moved to a higher, stable orbit.
If a satellite doesnt pass the test, it is easy to deorbit it from this lower orbit. That me purpose is to prevent cluttering orbits with non-functioning junk.
In this case, the storm increased the drag on the satellites and brought them down lower which prevented them from completing their tests and being moved to a higher orbit.
If it wasnt for SpaceXs attempts to reduce orbital clutter, the satellites would have been fine.

(10,072 posts)And we finally got fiber optics but....we got shitty Comcast (Xfinity) service with it. There's no competition out here, you take what you can get with utility services.
So, my Comcast service gets locked up alot and they spam blocked my daughter's call for no apparent reason. But I could go on with all the problems with Comcast. At least I can get DU pretty regularly.

(2,949 posts)While returning from Florida to Michigan one spring 15-20 years ago. We decided to take a different route to see more of our country. We stopped for the night in a campground in W.Virginia. Nice campground in the mountains. You could call the office and order pizza which was delivered to your door in short order and it was good. And they had wi-fi so it was a go for me. After consuming the pizza I got my laptop out and went to internet. Searched for Democratic Underground, message on screen said this site has been blocked because of foul language or something along those words.

(6,094 posts).... There is money in there to get HIGH-SPEED internet to every home. That alone will create 10 of thousands of new jobs. All communication copper wiring in every building will need to be upgraded to fiber optics.
IMO that is one reason the repugs don't want high-speed information at everyone's fingertips.
They want the general population to be dumb ...... easier to manipulate.
