My daughter has been accepted to college
She’s the 3rd generation of my family to go to college. 2nd generation of my wife’s family and I say that out of respect for my Father in law- he came out of the hollers (railroad - hard ass).
Her high school has been a weird time. She’s a COVID kid. Her middle school was brutal. She did work (International Bachelorette) and projects beyond what I did for the first years of college. Of course I was a bad student. I got an accounting degree after 10 years (Army included). She’s a good person. She started a LGBTQ+ club in high school. I’ve shielded her as much as possible from politics but we do discuss News and governing. She’s ADHD. I couldn’t understand her not turning in homework. Drove me crazy. She has some other applications out there - W&M UVA-Wise - but she got the 👍 from VCU. It’s where her mother/my wife met. Okay bragging a bit GPA 3.3 SAT 1450

14. I actually did that! A college nearby was offering a Liberal Studies Masters Degree program and
I eagerly signed up for it. What I realized was that the program was a kind of "gift" to the faculty who could teach what they loved, instead of grinding out requirement courses year by year. I took a writing course from a fabulous teacher, a course in transcendent religious history and writings, even an Economic history of the various theories about the question of "worth." Unfailingly, each course "lit my fire" of imagination. Then I started writing about the artist Caravaggio and now I've written two books on art history and a third I am still working out in my head.
It would be great if everyone had a course in liberal studies. |

she really wanted to be in because her grades dropped because of the homework problem.
I can only recall one teacher for whom she always turned in her homework, and she was well known as the toughest teacher in the school. Now she is an artist, specializing in body art and a very successful tattooist in Phoenix |

11. Hooray! Getting into college is a big deal, even getting into
the local community college that takes everyone. Because college of any kind offers opportunities, lots of opportunities.
My son likewise wasn't good about turning in homework. We eventually learned he's on the spectrum. Asperger's, although that specific diagnosis has gone away. Too bad, because it really was useful. Along the way he flunked out of two colleges, despite having a very high IQ. Right now he's in a PhD program in astronomy, and tells me he'll graduate this fall semester. |

My kid was an I.B. kid and it was extraordinarily demanding, requiring a seriousness and dedication above and beyond. You and she must be very proud.
My kid was wait listed at W&M,and Duke--and ended up chosing Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt turned out to be quite conservative, but she persevered. And we got to hang in Nashville. |

My girl is very practical. She wants to be an archeologist and knows she going to be in school for years. She wants to be as inexpensive as possible. She also applied to Ricard Bland (W&M) which, considering her classmates, surprised me.
I got lucky with this kid. |

42. Man, does that make me feel old!
I remember when she was born! Not gonna lie, the passage of time is something I really only notice when I look at our kids. I probably should feel embarrassed by that, but it's a fact, and I cannot deny it.
Underpants, it sounds like you guys raised a terrific kid. I'm not at all surprised, by that, but the thing that strikes me is your comment that she's a nice person. The academic stuff is wonderful, and absolutely something to be proud of, but realizing and celebrating her character tells me everything about the values your family demonstrated and modeled for her. WELL done! Kevsand and I also have a daughter. We pretty much raised her in politics. I joked for years that she was probably gonna do the teen rebellion thing and become a Rush Limbaugh fan. She didn't. She has entered a career that is political, and that was by her choice. We told her a long time ago that you have to stand for something, and I am so very proud of her for what she chooses to stand up for. She is running for a city wide office in two years, and already people are coming to her to ask how they can help her win. She's gonna do just fine. I'm enormously proud of her. She's good people. These DU offspring are pretty incredible! Love to you, and congratulations! ![]() Laura |

(But a little bit more to her - she's the one that's going to Uni, after all.
![]() Your daughter's numbers are virtually identical to those of my middle step-grand, and she should take pride in them, because they are no mean feat. "My grad" sure takes pride in her work and accepts nothing less than excellence from herself. Her extra-curriculars were through the roof, too. Varsity basketball and volleyball, sings the national anthem at school events, first chair flute in the county orchestra, performed a leading role in the Drama Club's annual production (and now she's hooked!) and for her first term at uni, she will be placed in second semester of second year, because she's also taken a ton of extension courses. And, I believe her career path at this point will gladden the good people here. She's aiming to be an investigative journalist. |
