We had some nesting near our front door one year. We could not go out that door without their swooping at us. One even pecked our cat on the back.
It's surprising that the owl just sat there. Maybe the attack stunned it.

When I lived in Miami as teenager, mockingbirds had a nest in the front of the house. They would attack anyone going out the front door.

They are loyal, and intensely protective of their nests, particularly when young mockingbirds are in it.
