A good band that was pretty much a one note sound.

Another one who was suppose to be the next Beatles...

Beach Boys were probably the closest band to the Beatles.

I loved the song, and the visuals were so striking.

It was deceptive; it looked simple, but there was really a lot of stuff going on...

Thanks.

I always thought this song had a late-period Beatles - a la 'Abbey Road' - sort of vibe to it...

There are a few songs on that album that show heavy influences.

I always liked that record, though.

I haven't listened to that since it was on the radio... 20 years ago or so, I think?

Some of the production values are super-90's (incredibly "sloshy" hi-hats, for starters), but what really strikes me is that it's at least a minute too long for a 60's pop song. There was something that happened I don't know when, where all pop songs became these behemoth things of 4 to 6 minutes, for almost no reason. This is a good song, but the last minute - at least - is pointless and makes it really quite boring to me. There are some great long songs, but so many great pop songs are in the 1:30 - 3:00 mark.

Of course the White Album was all over the place, stylistically and song-length-wise, but 'Abbey Road' and 'Let It Be' had several songs in the 4-minute range.

When The Beatles, or Bob Dylan, etc. had these long songs, it was because it was somehow demanded by the song structure. So many of these 90's songs just have guitar solos and/or way too many iterations of a chorus just tacked onto to them. "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" isn't long because it's a 3 minute song, then a guitar solo, and then the chorus a bunch more times.

And yes, in Dylan's case, most of his 6-7-minute-plus songs do something to justify their length, whether it's great lyrics or great atmosphere or both.

For an extreme example of "repeating the chorus a bunch of times" see:

The Beatles pre-Love Me Do and before they found their voice, trying to sound like Elvis.

The thing about the Beatles is they were influenced by so many different styles of music.

Most kids now think listening to punk and rock is getting a great variety.

But the Beatles grew up with big band music, country music, folk music, Classical, show tunes. All the stuff that you hear pulsing through and through the Beatles song catalogue

The whole CD is available/streamable at both places, it's called Die Happy & Other Songs About Life.

"She's That Kind of Girl" is track #3.

Thanks for listening!
