It occurs to me that having a cell phone with may be a good idea. I can't take the one my job provides and don't have one otherwise. I have no need for one outside of my work and don't want to enter into a year or two contract for one I'll only need for a few weeks.
Does anyone have experience with those cheapo prepaid ones I see for sale all around? Do they work in a wide range of places?

Sorry.

(10,418 posts)After you've been a lounger for a while, it feels natural to come here and ask people about stuff. You still might get some good posts on who thinks what is the best deal.

(6,094 posts)For basic telephone and text messaging, they should work fine. You have the same general issues of coverage areas that would affect any phone/smartphone. Depending on where you are traveling, you might have typical problems with areas without service.
If you need internet (web, email), you can find such capabilities with some of the prepaid systems. Haven't looked at those options recently.

(1,965 posts)I wouldn't use the text or internet functions. I just want to have access to phone. Just very basic. My son will be meeting my train in Flagstaff, or my bus, after the transfer, in Phoenix, yet to be determined. Mainly I just want to be able to call him if the train/bus is delayed, for instance.

(6,094 posts)Haven't been to Flagstaff in ages. Used to fly in, often in horrible thunderstorms with giant hail. Lovely area.
Curious what the cellular service is like along the tracks. There are a lot of empty spaces getting to Flagstaff by train or car.
Have a great trip.
