From some of the reviews I read at Amazon Prime it has to be viewed within the correct context of depression.

Lars Von Trier's initial inspiration for the film came from a depressive episode he suffered and the insight that depressed people have a tendency to remain peaceful during catastrophic events.
He notes that depressed people expect the worst to happen so those events don't bother them as much.
Interesting premise. Gonna have to watch it this weekend
