(68,644 posts)Since the samples you posted are exclusively black and white, I thought I'd ask.
Thanks!

(1,771 posts)Sorry. Should have made that clear. Any color (or non-color) works.

(42,770 posts)Just throwing this idea out there... I have wished at other times that we could add a couple sentences of explanation to our entries.
With this month's contest, the theme just seems to scream for that ability. I have noticed many photographs on websites and in books allow the taker to do this.
I know it's never been done here.
Thoughts?

(1,771 posts)An 'Artist Statement' would be very beneficial. My concern is that since this isn't part of the regular time tested rules I'd hate to force people to do something they are uncomfortable with or something they aren't sure how to do.
A confession. I had thought about eliminating the preliminary voting. I would pick out the 10 photos that go into the finals. But then I had this vision of pitchforks and torches.

(1,771 posts)I think the Theme is as adventurous as I want to get. Maybe just a little tweek here and there though.

(1,771 posts)Could still share all the photos without using the skewed prelim voting system.
One of the best learning tools with photography (IMO) is being able to critique photos. The Host is basically just an Office Worker. Not that's there is anything wrong with that. I just think doing something that gives the Host a more active role in the process would be beneficial to everyone.
Would the decision be biased? Absolutely. Just as it is in the off-line world of photo evaluations.
I seriously doubt I'm going to do that. Feel like it should be something discussed at a later date. Change is good. A routine that is always the same can make things a bit stale. It'd be nice to add a little 'spice' to the contests.

(15,812 posts)Arrange the photos in the preliminaries in such a way that your favorites have the best chance. I am pretty sure that would be okay with everyone. It is like seeding a tournament................you don't pick the finalists but you don't put all the best entries into the same batch to compete against each other in the preliminaries.
I haven't done that in the past but it has occurred to me.

(1,771 posts)My original thoughts were directed at removing the prelims from the voting. I've seen 'Photo A' get the most votes in one prelim group only to totally tank in the finals, or a photo gets screwed in the Prelims because of the other photos in that particular Prelim group.
Your suggestion is a nice alternative. I'll consider it.
Again, thank you.

(1,771 posts)I don't have a problem with larger photos. Honestly the 800 x 533 images are too small some times to be appreciated.

(31,319 posts)We are traveling--in Vienna right now--and today hubby and I were in the Kunsthistorisches Museum. If you saw the movie, The Museum Hours, that was it. Found my subject among the exhibits!
Very cool that they let you take photos--no flash--in most of the rooms. Credit goes to the museum for the lighting!
Going across the pond is on my bucket list. I don't recall the movie 'The Museum Hours'. Will have to check it out.

Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)to find a subject that is both....that is unless you find a good metaphor and then doctor the pic up? Or take an
abstract photo and then hope you can find a metaphor?
Just brainstorming here.
postatomic
(1,771 posts)Ideally it would be both but I don't want to stifle entries. An abstract metaphor shouldn't be that difficult but I guess it all depends on what you are doing.
No stress. Do whatever works for you.

(8,039 posts)an artist statement. I don't see why you couldn't have people do that since you are the host. It would add a bit more work and checking on your part though since you would have to copy & paste the title, photo and statement into the prelims and finals. Now as to skipping prelims, that might cause a stir. When the contest was first started there were no prelims and only the 10 spots. The 10 spots were filling in minutes if not seconds. That is why it was expanded to 30 and prelims then finals.

(42,770 posts)something should be done to increase viewership/voting. Only an infinitesimal number of people
view and vote - compared to total viewers/posters.
Maybe he is on to something with only one vote

(2,029 posts)I seem to remember some time back that cross-posting to the Lounge was mentioned. I rarely, if ever, go there, so I have no idea if the contest is seen there or, if it would make that much of a difference. In any event, I agree that it would be nice to somehow increase the voting pool.
I think it's possible to use the titles to reflect the metaphors.
That's what I'm doing. I think I have my entry and will title it with a metaphor.
