(46,436 posts)We had a little scare with the earthquake this morning - some knocked-over stuff and a little broken glass from a crashing picture frame - but we went for a great walk after that, when I took these pictures. We have had days and days of rain, but it's finally cleared up and has been absolutely beautiful out the past few days. Winter will be here soon.

(2,212 posts)... it's what's known as a Bee Mimic Fly. He had you fooled, huh?

(46,436 posts)I thought maybe it was a Yellowjacket, which is why I said bee/wasp. I'm happy to know what it was, and I assume then that it doesn't sting?
No stinger. As harmless as a housefly. It depends upon the yellowjacket-like coloration to scare potential predators away. Exceedingly successful mimicry. It gives me a tremendous appreciation for how evolution can arrive at ingenious solutions, given a few million years.

(38,958 posts)Very nice. I have some extension tubes purchased several years ago and haven't done much with them as of yet. Might have to give them a try.

(46,436 posts)Jim's going to Texas next month to visit his family, so sometime while he's gone I'm going to board the dog, bundle up ALL my gear and take an overnight road trip to Seward and points in between so I can take all the time I want, stopping wherever I feel like. I'm so looking forward to that. My husband is a very patient man and never complains, but I always feel like I need to hurry up when we're out together since I don't want to inconvenience him.
