Hosting of Photo Contests has been tied to winning the previous contest. But, in order to post
polls on DU (for preliminaries/finals) one must have a star. In our last contest--Spring--
we had 11/29 entries submitted from people without stars. All three winners were from photographers
without stars.
So, we also have a list of people who are willing to help out with hosting responsibilities,
but it's mainly intended to help first-time winners with the process of hosting or people whose lives are so
hectic at the moment that hosting is really difficult.
It has occurred to several of us that maybe it's time to uncouple hosting from winning.
The way we could do that would be to have an annual calendar of volunteer hosts.
Sign up in advance for a month that suits your schedule to host. No more, Yikes!
I won and now I have to host in one week! People could plan for hosting. We might
be able to attract more entries because photographers wouldn't have to worry about
winning and not being able to host either because of their schedule or star status.
We could even get this started with the Summer Contest (we are going to need a volunteer
since NV Whino doesn't have a star and also is withdrawing from DU).
So, please vote to give us a sense of whether this would work.

No, I would not sign up to volunteer to host a photo contest, but I like the idea of disconnecting hosting from winning.

Leave the contest hosting connected to winning the previous month's contest, i.e, don't change anything.

(22,378 posts)Here is hoping that we have opinions, votes and involvement. Either way it goes we will be better off than we are now.
The only way we are not furthered is if "you" don't speak up.

(10,136 posts)I can see it helping here.
I personally would not officially volunteer myself to any particular contest due to my schedules, but I am always happy to lend a hand if needed.

(27,404 posts)I like the idea of a sign up sheet and I like the idea of uncoupling winning from hosting.

(18,219 posts)I am not willing to host, simply because I have no idea how to do it. I have been fortunate that I have not won any contests, so I didn't have to learn, but it is intimidating to enter, knowing that there is a booby prize for you if you win.

(90,740 posts)Is this a rule change we can all get behind? Then let's move forward with the idea!!
Thank you!
