(31,067 posts)Time flies, sometimes at warp speed.
I worked in Embarcadero Center in San Francisco. I was about to leave early so I could be home in time for first pitch of the World Series. Then it happened. I think the most frightening aspect about an earthquake is wondering just how big it'll be once the shaking starts. They all start out little and then grow in intensity and length. And you ask yourself: "Is this the big one?" The first few seconds are terrifying.
Walked home to Russian Hill. Of course, my wife had just loaded up with a ton of food from The Price Club (now Costco). Our natural gas was still working, so she cooked a up a huge batch of chicken stew and we shared it with our fellow apartment renters. Electric was out for about 48 hours. But we had natural gas, and hot water, thanks to an "innovative" solar hot water system our landlord had installed a few years earlier!

(31,067 posts)I didn't know local coverage like this had been preserved. Its amazing to watch everything unfold from a San Francisco perspective. We missed it in The City because the power was out.
Thank you so much for sharing!

(41,764 posts)3 days? I don't remember.. I was born in 1987...so I was there.. but don't remember much except what my parents shared with me... My dad was working at an Art Gallery down by Fisherman's wharf at the time.. he said all the power went out, after getting a ride home by a stranger on a Motorcycle ...my mom of course, was freaked out... we lived in the Haight Ashbury at the time, Haight at Lyon Street. I found that video not long ago and watched what I missed. At the time My Dad and Mom were rooting for the Giants...they later Lost the World Series...well, you know the rest.

(31,067 posts)You can get by pretty well without electricity if you have water and cook with gas. All our utilities worked except electric (same as last week's PG&E shutdown).
Cool that your dad got at ride home from a stranger -- and on a motorcycle!
