New York State Assembly votes unanimously to ban shark fin trade, following Senate
The New York State Assembly voted unanimously on Monday to outlaw the shark fin trade in the state, following the Senate. The vote sends the measure to Gov. Cuomos desk for a signature that could make New York the seventh state in the nation to ban the sale, purchase and possession of shark fins.
New York must not be complicit in the reprehensible practice of shark finning, which has led to the demise of shark populations worldwide. With the passage this bill, which I am proud to co-sponsor with Assembly Member [Alan] Maisel [D-Brooklyn], the possession and sale of shark fins will become illegal here, and we will join the entire West Coast in banning a cruel practice that is wreaking havoc on our oceanic ecosystems, Assembly member Linda B. Rosenthal (D-Manhattan) said in a release.
