Housing costs, supply are getting dire in Snohomish County

LYNNWOOD — The average cost of a two-bedroom apartment in Snohomish County doubled between 2010 and 2019, according to a county report released Wednesday.

At $1,889 per month, nearly half the county can’t afford the rent without being “cost burdened” — spending more than a third of income on housing and utilities.

By that measure, you’d need an annual income of $76,000, or the equivalent of three minimum-wage jobs.

-snip-

“Too many of our residents are struggling to afford housing,” said Snohomish County Executive Dave Somers, who co-chairs the task force. “I launched HART last May to address these issues. I wanted to bring all our local partners together to see what we could do to help.”

It’s not just minimum-wage workers feeling the pinch, too, the report says. One third of residents in the county are “cost burdened.”

Without some serious and rapid changes to mitigate this problem starting now, you are looking at mere taste of what the future will be for more and more people, maybe even you and me and people we know.

Considering that HUD is supposed to be on this, (Ben Carson's response: Doh!) and it takes a long time to plan and even break ground on affordable housing, we are not seeing much in the way of a response to the right to dispossession. Like the wealthy for whom this country stands, we all have the right to live under the overpass or in our car. That's equality. Well, until more laws to criminalize that choice are enacted, that is.

America has a homeless future. Now, how GREAT is that, AGAIN? Maybe MAGA means we are going to go back to the life of the Great Depression. A distorted idea of greatness to say the least, but much closer to the reality of what is coming for us.
