Third Door Coalition crafts plan to solve chronic homelessness emergency
The Third Door Coalition announced Tuesday a plan to solve King County’s homelessness problem in five years, but it will require a public-private partnership and to scale housing by 4,500 units throughout the region.
“The business community has been asking for a solution and this is it," said Chad Mackay, CEO of Fire & Vine Hospitality. “We believe we don’t have to agree on everything in order to understand the data proving that supportive housing works."
Mackay co-founded the Third Door Coalition in 2018 with Sara Rankin, a professor at Seattle University School of Law. The coalition is a group of local leaders working to find solutions to chronic homelessness.
The $1.6 billion proposal was based on two years of needs assessments, cost-driver analysis and the exploration of funding models. Funding would come from the private and public sectors over the next five years. The proposal suggests that the state support 20% of the funding while King County supports 30%, the city of Seattle supports 10% and business leaders make up the last 40%.
