New survey shows homelessness, encampments are top concerns for Seattle residents

A new survey commissioned by the Downtown Seattle Association (DSA) and Seattle Metro Chamber of Commerce is highlighting many of the issues that Seattle residents find troubling with a majority of respondents saying they are "unhappy about the direction of the city."

The survey interviewed 900 Seattle voters on their attitudes towards major issues in the city including police cuts, public spaces and tent encampments. A majority of the interviews — almost 550 — occurred in Districts 1, 2, 6 and 7, meaning the majority of respondents were from neighborhoods like West Seattle, Downtown Seattle, Ballard and Northeast Seattle.

Overall, the study paints a pessimistic view of the city. Fifty-four percent of respondents feel things in Seattle "have gotten pretty seriously off on the wrong track" while only 35% replied that things are "generally going in the right direction."

The issue respondents were "most frustrated or concerns about" was homelessness, with 74% saying that "unauthorized tent encampments are getting out of control in many city parks and playgrounds."
