Washington saw more than 6% increase in homelessness year over year

Washington saw a more than 6% increase in the number of people experiencing homelessness between 2019 and 2020, a larger increase than most other states across the country, according to a new report.

The report, from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, showed Washington reported an additional 1,346 people experiencing homelessness between 2019 and 2020, making it the state with the third largest absolute increase in homelessness across the country. California and Texas were the states with the largest absolute year over year increases, according to the report.

Washington also saw one of the largest increases in people who were chronically homeless. The state saw a nearly 34% increase in the number of people who were considered chronically homeless between 2019 and 2020, or an additional 1,497 people, a larger absolute increase than any other state except for California.

Seattle/King County also ranked among the major metro areas with the largest number of people experiencing homelessness and the largest number of people experiencing family homelessness.

I have to wonder how much of the 6% increase are from WA residents and how much is homeless arriving from other states.

There was a study from ~2000 I think which showed I think about 1/2 of homeless people moved large distances seasonally, it was pretty amazing they were so mobile.
