Construction on new Bainbridge Island ferry terminal walkway begins this summer
BAINBRIDGE ISLAND A state contractor will begin to replace the aging walkway at the ferry terminal in Winslow this summer.
The $33 million project will result in a new passenger walkway that runs from the main terminal building down to slips for ferries. When work wraps up, the new span will be like ones at Washington State Ferries Bremerton and Edmonds terminals, with windows and an open, airy feel, agency spokeswoman Hadley Rodero said.
Contrack Watts was awarded a contract for the work in January. On-site work is scheduled to begin over the summer and wrap up in early 2024, after the old walkway is demolished.
About 1.2 million walk-on passengers rode the Bainbridge Island-Seattle route in 2021, making it by far the busiest route for foot passengers in the system. The terminals current walkway has wooden support beams, and the span is about 50 years old and is seismically vulnerable, according to the agency.
