Welcome to Juneuary: It's a little dreary, but it's not all bad news

EVERETT — Yes, it’s June … uary.

This year we’ve endured the cold, the rain, the snow. But even as summer approaches, that damp, gloomy trend hasn’t quite disappeared.

It’s a big departure from the unprecedented heatwave Western Washington weathered almost a year ago.

“Cool and wet have been the theme for the Pacific Northwest,” said National Weather Service Seattle meteorologist Jacob DeFlitch. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. It could mean a shorter wildfire season, and salmon could thrive.

Besides, we all know it will rain on July 4th. Next day is the unofficial start of summer.

I prefer cooler weather, and will happily take it any day over three digit heat. I am really hoping for fewer fires, and a hopefully smoke free summer and fall, and I am cheering for our salmon, which have had access to some streams that they haven't been able to ascend in recent years due to low water levels. Thank you weather gods and goddesses for the valley rain and mountain snow.

I'm loving not having to get out there and water it all the time. Let it rain!...
