404 Power Profile: Nigel S. Wright – F-35, Hawker Beechcraft, Onex & Chief of Staff on Loan – draft

“Our aim now is to drive a stake through the heart of the Tory party”

Nigel Wright, the man Prime Minister Stephen Harper has chosen to be his next Chief of Staff, may be a curious choice for the job.

Although Canadians are already questioning Stephen Harper’s rigid, hard-right decisions to scrap the mandatory long-form census, spend $10 billion on American-style prisons, and ignore women and victims’ groups in the debate on the long-gun registry, his new Chief of Staff hails from the same Reform-Alliance tradition and has called for the end of the Progressive Conservative party for being too… progressive:

“Under Joe Clark, the Conservative party has ceased to exist as a right-of-centre alternative. As much as it pains me to say it, our aim now is to drive a stake through the heart of the Tory party.” (Nigel Wright, Vancouver Sun, May 9, 2000)
