The administration of President Joe Biden will review US policy on Cuba, the White House said on Thursday, after former President Donald Trump rolled back a historic Obama-era detente with Havana during his tenure.

“Our Cuba policy is governed by two principles. First, support for democracy and human rights – that will be at the core of our efforts. Second is Americans, especially Cuban Americans, are the best ambassadors for freedom in Cuba. So we’ll review the Trump administration policies,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said at a news briefing.

Trump, a Republican, clamped down on Cuba after taking office in 2017, tightening restrictions on US travel and remittances to Cuba, and imposing sanctions on shipments of Venezuelan oil to the island.

The policy was popular among the large Cuban-American population in South Florida, helping Trump win the state in November though he lost the election to Democrat Biden.

ALBERTO KORDA
EL QUIJOTE DE LA FAROLA - ALBERTO KORDA

(THE QUIXOTE OF THE LANTERN)

Photo taken in the afternoon of July 26, 1959 in a rally held in front of the National Library to commemorate the 6th anniversary of the assault on the Moncada Barracks, that year 500 thousand peasants from all over the country were invited, many of whom had received their titles from land owners through the Agrarian Reform Law signed on May 17 of the same year, most of them for the first time visiting a city.

The peasant in question, called Eleuterio Tirado Jiménez , a "palm tree or palm tree topping" *, from the Santa Clara area, climbed to the top of a public light of more than 35 m to witness and listen to the speech. Later he sued the photographer for image rights, but finally everything was cleared up and they ended up being friends.

THE GIRL WITH THE PALO DOLL

Photo taken in mid-February 1959 in Sumidero, Pinar del Río Province and turned into a denunciation of the helplessness in which capitalist voracity had plunged many Cuban children.

Korda, who took photos for an advertising job, entered the patio of a high-rise, white and blue house, and found this girl who was holding to her chest the only doll that her two years old had been able to caress, a piece of wood rescued between the garbage in the yard covered with her only dress, a piece of paper.

Some time later the author declared "This girl who was hugging a log that she called my baby, convinced me that I should dedicate my work to a revolution that would transform those inequalities." 22 years later, the already young Paula María Seijo Beade , a nurse by profession, died of leukemia.

* The photo was published for the first time on Wednesday, September 2, 1959 in the Revolution newspaper under the title "We cannot forget this girl . " In addition, it became the image of a campaign entitled "NOT A GIRL WITHOUT A DOLL AT CHRISTMAS DE LA LIBERTAD" that aimed to deliver toys to all poor children in Cuba.
