Israel/Palestine
Related: About this forumLessons on hypocrisy from Syria
The fighting in Syria once again proves the sad old adage that human rights organizations and their advocates in the mainstream Western media are essentially anti-Israel. There is no other way to explain the fact that all these high-and-mighty moralizers are ignoring the frightening plight of Palestinians and Christians in the Syrian civil war.
You see, there is no anti-Israel angle to the story of Palestinian or Christian suffering in Syria. That suffering cant really be blamed on the Jews. So nobody cares.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East reports that approximately 250,000 Palestinians have been displaced inside Syria since the beginning of the conflict two years ago. In May, for example, some 6,000 Palestinians were expelled from their homes in Ein al-Tal, a refugee camp near Aleppo in northern Syria.
The response from the world: Nothing. Silence.
In addition, more than 55,000 Palestinians have been forced to flee Syria to Lebanon and Jordan over the past two years. In Lebanon, the Palestinian refugees join more than 500,000 other Palestinians who live in refugee camps and are subject to apartheid laws that deny them work, social and health benefits, and freedom of movement.
But of course, there has been no international uproar about this.
Now imagine if six (never mind 60, 600, or 6,000) squatting Palestinian families were forced to move two kilometers out of an IDF firing zone in the southern Hebron hills. There would be UN investigations, international tribunals, condemnations from Western capitals, and much handwringing and moralizing by Amnesty, Human Rights Watch and more.
Actually, this has happened exactly. A grand total of 10 Palestinian families were forced out by an IDF evacuation order. And the world went berserk. It gets much worse. At least 2,000 Palestinians have been killed in Syria, by both the rebels and the Syrian army. But of course, you wouldnt know about this from the Western press.

Apparently in your view, Palestinians and Christians only have human rights when there's an anti- Israel angle. Otherwise, you don't give a FF.

(8 posts)If you look at your allegation, it is not entirely valid. There is definitely an uproar from Human rights organizations.
In syria, the war is going on right now.
In syria, the govt does not have complete control over the country and the people, unlike in Israel. Hence, the less uproar.
In Israel, there is no large scale war and the country is under the complete control of the govt. They can adjust and change the area of the military exercise. Maybe ask some jews to vacate their land (Now that is unlikely).
----------
But there is one more angle to it.
Why is the west spending and sending weapons and money, either directly or through their lackeys? Why are they prolonging the war?
The war in Syria is to remove an anti-israeli govt and replace it with a pro-israeli one.
Eventually, israel and hegemony is a part of the big picture.

(30,109 posts)The opposition is arguably worse than Assad and is composed of both the Muslim Brotherhood and Al-Qaeda. Neither of the 2 are friendly towards Israel. Where are you getting your information?
And you're wrong about media and world silence WRT Palestinians and Christians in Syria. The world couldn't care less. There's very little media attention on the 2 besieged groups of people. The UN hasn't said a word about them. The reason is because Jews cannot be blamed for their plight.

(30,109 posts)It's no contest over the past 2 years.
Here's a video 3 weeks after Assad gassed thousands. There had been no emergency session at the UN up to that point because the UN was too busy singling out and obsessing about Israel.
Now the thing is, if you read the OP you'd notice it's about Palestinians and Christians in Syria who are suffering and being killed. The silence about these 2 groups is deafening because Jews can't be blamed for their plight.
This is the corrupt, broken UN you support....a UN that couldn't give a shit about Palestinians and Christians unless Jews can be blamed. And you thought they were pro-Palestinian, didn't you?
Where are all the resolutions condemning Arab regimes for their plight in Gaza, Syria, Egypt....? Name one. Just one!

(45,850 posts)The UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) Friday strongly condemned the continued gross, systematic and widespread violations of human rights and all violations of international humanitarian law in Syria and urged the government to grant immediate access to the UN commission of inquiry.
The UNHRC demanded that the Syrian authorities cooperate fully with the commission of inquiry, including by granting it immediate, full and unfettered access throughout the country.
"The council strongly condemned the continued gross, systematic and widespread violations of human rights and all violations of international humanitarian law by the Syrian authorities and affiliated militias, as well as any human rights abuses and violations of international humanitarian law by armed opposition groups," its said in a resolution adopted at the end of its 24th session.

Syria: UN human rights chief condemns use of chemical weapons Sep 9, 2013
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay spoke two days ahead of the expected update from a UN panel probing for war crimes and other human rights abuses in Syria, including the use of chemical weapons. The 47-nation UN Human Rights Council, which authorized the probe, is likely to consider a resolution on Syria before the end of its session.

(30,109 posts)...but there are also many resolutions vs. Israel, unlike Syria. Also, there's nothing singling out persecution vs. Palestinian refugees or Christians. The UN recognizes Palestinians and Christians when they condemn and do write-ups on Israel, but these groups apparently don't have human rights when Jews can't be blamed.

Samantha Power says she'll also work to make the U.N. more efficient and stand up for freedom.
Power has been criticized by some groups for past comments considered critical of Israel.
Still, the former journalist and human rights activist is expected to be confirmed.
The Irish-born Power told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday that the U.S. has no "greater friend" than Israel.
She criticized the U.N. for its "disproportionate" focus on Israel.
Power also said the Security Council's failure to stop Syria's civil war is a "disgrace that history will judge harshly."

(35,954 posts)I came to the conclusion several years ago that yr clueless when it comes to the UN, how it's structured, or what the actual problems are in specific areas (hint hint: veto power of permanent members of the Security Council may have been a great idea immediately after WWII, but some abuse their power).
I read it. Which is why I said it's cynical and politically motivated bullshit written by someone who's giving a great example of hypocrisy with every word they write. Despite his mewling about the world being silent, I just have to turn on the telly to be aware that there's a tidal wave of refugees fleeing Syria. Only a sick weirdo would ignore Syrians who aren't Christian, especially as there's a hell of a lot of them. The exodus of refugees is so massive that when the world talks about refugees, they don't care what religion or nationality they are. Only someone who's got an agenda that's so blatant that Blind Freddy couldn't miss it would zero in, ignore all the rest and only focus on some.
btw, thanks for being consistent. The person who wrote that OP has some rather unusual views on Obama. In another article he's whining that Obama's deliberately weakening the US by appeasing the Arabs and he's outraged that Obama sees the US as just another member of the global community and not the leader who can attack other countries with impunity and demand other countries adhere to international law while the US blithely ignores it. This guy is really pining for the good ol' days of Bushco...
I always have to wonder about the intelligence levels of folk who fling such idiotic stuff around without realising it can be easily turned around on them by using their 'logic'. Here goes with the use of that mindless 'logic': That means he believes that his own silence (more likely slavering denial that they are actually refugees) on the plight of Palestinian refugees when it comes to Israel's part in it is because Arabs can't be blamed for their plight. In fact, it means he and those who sail along with him nodding in agreement must hate Arabs, coz there's clearly no other reasons for anyone to ignore or deny it other than they want to blame the Arabs for everything.
See how stupid that line of 'thinking' is. I know advocates of that 'thinking' are hypocrites who'd shriek 'BUT THAT'S DIFFERENT!!!' when it's turned back on them, but rational folk can see it for what it is...
Here you go again with that ridiculous crap where you treat countries and international organisations as though they're football teams with cheerleaders. Has it crossed yr mind at all that there's things that normal people don't support or hate with a burning fury? That things just exist and the world isn't a place where yr either with something or against something with no grey area in between?
For the record, the only thing I support is the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles. They're a football team. I think they even have cheer-leaders.
What's this thing with you and Arabs? Yr very very fixated on them....

(30,109 posts)There have been dozens against Israel.
I don't see how anyone like yourself, who says they stand for universal human rights everywhere, can justify that.
And only the deliberately blind would deny there's been 100x more world coverage about Israel's perceived violations against Palestinians than Lebanon, Egypt, Jordan, or Syria's violations.
You're not fooling anyone with your bullshit games here.
Violet_Crumble
(35,954 posts)Yet when me and Az showed you a link to all the resolutions that proved that was bullshit, you started cherry-picking and 'yeah, but, so-and-so gets mentioned less!!' Seriously, how long will it take for you to start complaining about the word-count in resolutions? It's on the same level of silliness...
I can totally understand why someone like you doesn't see things about me. If you did, I'd start to worry I'm doing something wrong...
I see yr starting to gallop off on another tangent. Do you want me to follow you?
So now you take it upon yrself to speak on behalf of all other DUers? I guess that'd be an easy mistake for someone who regularly insists they know what other DUers think even when that DUers there telling you that's not what they think...

(58,724 posts)The claim was that the world ignored the fact that "... 6,000 Palestinians were expelled from their homes in Ein al-Tal" - which is certainly a more reasonable claim than that the world has ignored the situation in Syria (which is not what is claimed in the quote you excerpted).
With respect to what is actually claimed in the quote, do you know if there there any UN resolutions condemning that expulsion?

(35,954 posts)The author of the OP is a raving RW nutter who attacks Obama for appeasing Arabs in earlier articles at JPost. When the world talks about the Syrian refugee crisis, they're talking about all of them, not just ones cherry-picked to score some political points...
