If President Obama had been previously divorced

and had a son born to a third woman (to whom he was never married), would he have ever been a serious contender for President?

If Hillary had been previously divorced and had a baby born out of wedlock, would she be at the top of the polls?

Somehow I doubt it.

Black people and women are treated differently and acknowledging this isn't playing the race or gender card.

but if he had the coverage of his personal life that the Clintons' have had, he wouldn't appreciate it. Up till now he's been able to tell reporters that certain topics are off-limits, but nothing is off limits when you're running for the Presidency.

pregnant Nancy...and she was his 2nd wife.

He was lucky Jane Wyman was the soul of discretion!

Grover Cleveland survived an out-of-wedlock child (he supported the kid but muddied the waters, and there was no DNA back then--it has since been proven that, yes, in Maury fashion, he WAS the father!!!).

Thing about that kind of stuff, though, is that Democrats are too polite to carp about it. They bring it up only to demonstrate differences in treatment, and to demonstrate that there's baggage there. If the unvetted baggage were dragged out and examined, I think a lot of people would be surprised.

The GOP has no compunctions on those lines, though--and that's where things get problematic.

It's one of HRC's strengths, that everyone has pawed through her suitcases. There's nothing new in there; everything is asked and answered, and it makes people look petty to bring up old stuff that has been run through the mill several times already.

and two husbands. That's just unimaginable on every level.

Women in this society are still held to different standards than men.

scandal-plagued rightwingers into "victims." It's never the fault of the family values conservative who's caught with a prostitute or having an affair, somehow the media or liberals are to blame.

If the conservative guy does the same thing, he was enticed and entrapped by a "brazen hussy!"

They're not even subtle about it!

had all that negative an impact on either Secretary Clinton's or President Obama's chances at the presidency. Of course, I am a Millennial who primarily associates with other Millennials, so maybe my perception is a bit skewed.

A baby born out of wedlock is a different story though. I'm sure it's a scenario that would hurt Secretary Clinton's chances and probably prevented President Obama from ever becoming Commander In Chief. Of course it's completely unfair, as having an out of wedlock child reveals nothing about a candidate's character unless he or she abandons the child or fails to pay child support or something along those lines. Still, I'm sure that if Bernie were a woman or person of color, this part of his life would be dug into further, and I say this as a diehard Sanders supporter.
