Shula: Miami Dolphins were about class, didn’t deflate any balls

<snip>

"Four months after referring to coach Bill Belichick as “Beli-cheat,” Don Shula couldn’t resist taking another shot at the Patriots on Saturday.

Speaking during the unveiling of plans to celebrate the Dolphins’ 50th anniversary this season, Shula said the Dolphins always comported themselves “with a lot of class, a lot of dignity. Always done the right way. We didn’t deflate any balls. We always tried to live by the rules and set an example.”

Asked later whether the Patriots’ Spygate and ball deflation scandals will tarnish their accomplishments, Shula said, “I’ll pass on that question.”

The team where bullying in the locker room was treated as normal locker-room hijinks?

Things were different in Shula's day throughout the league. And no, I'm not bitter because he abandoned the Baltimore Colts for the Fish.

n the 1982 AFC Championship game, the Miami Dolphins came out victorious over the New York Jets 14-0 thanks to Jets' quarterback Richard Todd throwing five interceptions, including the one seen in the video to A.J. Duhe that was returned for a touchdown.

On the surface (and to Dolphins fans), there was nothing controversial about this. The better team won the game thanks to a superior defense to punch a trip to the Super Bowl. What makes this even better was the fact that this victory came over the New York Jets.

But the controversy came from then-Jets head coach Walt Michaels, who was upset prior to the game with Don Shula and the Dolphins' decision to not cover the Orange Bowl field.

Saying the field conditions were less than ideal is a huge understatement, as a January rain storm pummeled South Florida both the day before and the morning of the game. This resulted in a muddy field that had the side-effect of neutralizing the speed that the Jets had on offense.

...un-neutralized!

Thanks for bringing this game up...

...there I was, out of town, forced to watch the game in some backwater N. Florida drinking hole. Got there early and scored a prime position at the end of the bar nearest the large screen projection TV. By this point in the game (the interception) I was pretty much hammered but having a great time. Duhe scores! The bar erupts (all 7 of them)! I grab a bar rag and do the white towel thing. The bar rag slips from my hand, arcs high, and takes out a row of glasses hanging over the inside of the bar. Boom! Crash! Splat! Glass everywhere...the floor, the ice cooler, the bartender's feet. The bar goes silent. I yell "next round's on me." The bar erupts again. I pick up another rag....whoooooooooooo..

Actually, around that time I was still liking the Giants because I grew up before there were the Pats, and the Giants were perpetual losers still. I remember watching the first Super Bowl and then there's a long blur of the playoffs until the mid-80's.
